New San Mames Stadium (Bilbao, Spain)

Bilbao is situated on the north coast of Spain. It was an industrial city in the nineteenth and twentieth century, which is involved in a urban transformation since two decades ago. Then the city got an international projection with the construction of Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, and it continues nowadays in a proactive way to transform an industrial city in a tourist and technology centre.

One of the main identities of the city is the Athletic Football Club and its stadium, San Mamés. We replace the old stadium with a new one in order to increasing the seatings capacity and getting a new functional concept of building. Acoording with the location of the project in downtown, we make the building thought of as a transparent object with a capacity of 55,000 spectators.

Other proposals of the competition were located outside the centre, and that circumstance would have supposed the loss of a characteristic icon in Bilbao. The project stems from the idea of an urban reference, a city icon in Bilbao.

 

Project floorplants and sections express building’s will of being a filter between both public scenarios: the city and the playground. We establishes transparency grades depending on the dialogue. 

This feature has been made possible in three ways:


- Space continuation and direct access from the street to the interior.
- Pedestrian view from the outside of the stadium to the great interior space of the pitch.
-The exterior skin of the building, made of geometric pieces of ETFE, is configurated as a vibrant and traslucent element.
- Doublefaced interior  and scale treatment of the spaces in order to create a promenade experience for the spectator.
- Control, distribution and security of spectators flow, avoiding partitioned spaces by the building.
