About

Leslie is currently enrolled at Washington University in St. Louis and will obtain her Master of Architecture in Spring 2014. For the two year program she was chosen to receive the annual Danforth Scholarship, given to only one graduate student a year. She joined the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) and competed in the Urban [space] US12...Idea Center competition where the competition group of students at Washington University in St. Louis won the 2nd place prize.

She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Design in Architecture at the University of Florida in Spring 2012. Active in Alpha Rho Chi (Professional Architecture Fraternity) as Worthly Clerk for two years, she enjoyed the fellowship and participating in Relay for Life and other fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. Before graduating she received the Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal for service, professional involvement, and academic achievement.

Outside of academia, Leslie enjoys being active, experiencing nature, and spending time with family. She helps her father, Steve Wheeler, preparing and assisting with aid before, during, and after the Ultra-Marathons he competes in (completing seven 100-mile runs). A recent run in the Summer of 2012, Leslie drove the support car for her father in his mission to run a 100 miles from Orlando (their hometown) to Gainesville (her undergraduate collage) in attempt to raise money and awareness for saving the art and music programs in Seminole County schools.

Leslie's hobbies include: spending time with her two brothers, Lance and Price, along with her friends and family, traveling, running, sketching, camping, hiking, kayaking, taking photographs, and attending local concerts.

NOMA Student Design Competition - Urban [space] US12...Idea Center, 2nd Place

NOMA is seeking ideas for the invigoration and infusion of community led design and economic development for urban spaces in Southwest Detroit. The design problem requires in-depth research of historical site conditions as well as an understanding of the current social, cultural, economic, and physical space conditions found in this unique community. Designers must also understand the entrepreneurial spirit of the current citizens and envision solutions that will support sustained and enhanced economic development in Southwest Detroit, an area that has been severely under-resourced for several decades. Successful planning and architectural design solutions must address how the identity and physical spaces of the city/neighborhood may be reinvented to optimally leverage Michigan Avenue’s Corktown District.
