Light and Motion

The assignment for this project was to make a kinetic piece.  I aimed to create an abstract form infusing light, motion, and sound.  What resulted is reminiscent of a lighthouse on the ocean.  The lamp is like the tower, and the balls and teetering of the plate is like the movement and sound of waves.  As the plate moves back and forth, the light goes on and off, similar to the flickering of lighthouses.

Another aspect of form I focused on was that of conflicting entities.  The lamp is whole and organic.  It is elevated like a lighthouse tower.  The steel balls and curved rods reinforce this.  However, the black wooden plate intersects the lamp and adds a horizontal layer.  Despite this, the entities work together to create a visually interesting piece.

I also had an architectural design perspective when creating this piece and saw it as a pavilion/outlook space.  The plate would be the gathering space for the public.  They could enjoy the serenity of the light or the gentle swaying of the ground beneath their feet.  At specified intervals the plate would move, giving the public the sensation of being on the water.
