Due to a very small site and existing non-conforming elements of this small Laguna cottage, we were faced with a greater design challenge than any of the new construction projects we've designed. Required to keep the existing portions as existing and intact, we gutted the interior and maximized the allowable square footage with a contemporary cedar-clad box that cantilevers over the garage.
We like to think of it as a modern architectural element dropped onto an 100-year-old cottage- we had to maintain the existing footprint and corresponding bay window of what was once a general store many years prior.
A complete redesign of the interior and cantilevered utilized the extension to maximize the space (to about 735 sf), and the project was completed in early 2012.
