Toyosu Lalaport Center

Toyosu Lalaport, located in the historic IHI dockyards of Tokyo Bay, features a distinctly industrial and maritime character focused on the drama of the quay, and the boating activity on the waterfront. The strong curves of the boat forms frame a multipurpose outdoor plaza with stunning view of the bay.

The historic IHI dockyards of Tokyo Bay are being re-imagined as a valuable site for new development. Taking advantage of its valuable setting with Harumi-dori to the East and Tokyo Bay to the West, the Toyosu Project is a retail and lifestyle centre, with 200 existing stores as well as a variety of new dining and entertainment venues. The design has two main buildings. The larger parcel is a three-level retail center that features four boat forms designed to recall the variety of ships that have been built on the dockyard site in its history.

The strong curves of the boat forms help to form an outdoor plaza that provides stunning views of the Bay, as well as a setting for additional outdoor retail pavilions. This plaza picks up on the industrial character of the site, designed like the deck of a ship, with metal balconies like the superstructure of a modern ship, and centered around a large dock-like water feature. The building houses three additional levels of parking as well as basement facilities. The smaller building 4 is a two-level retail center with an additional two levels of roof parking. The project as a whole attempts to create a distinctly industrial and maritime character, focused back onto the drama of the quay, and the remaining docks and boating activity on the waterfront.
