Charleston Catholic School / Sacred Heart Church

Located on Charleston’s popular King Street, Charleston Catholic School was in need of additional space for middle school students as well as a fresh architectural statement for the exterior. The K-8 private school is situated on an important commercial corridor and allowed the team to create a new identity in the city for the Dioceses of Charleston. KSQ’s solution included an iconic stair tower that evokes the look of monastic architecture, as well as an exterior circulation area complete with stained glass. The materials blend with existing buildings on the campus, and the architecture of the addition respects the height, scale, and mass of its residential neighbors.

As a school that places an emphasis on the arts and sciences, the new interior space includes art, music and administrative offices that were added to offer students and staff a dynamic new space for creative thinking. Renovations include Kindergarten classrooms, science classrooms, and a computer lab.
