GOWANUS PARK

Fall 2015 Design studio project

Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn is a post-industrial area with a lot of warehouses, chemical factories and open parking lots. One of the primary problems in this are being archaic sewer system combined with storm water system tends to floods the canal and the surrounding areas. It hardly has any natural vegetation in the surrounding areas to retain the surface runoff water leading to frequent flooding. Gowanus Park is an initiative towards reversing the environmental pollution caused due to industrial waste and to create an environmental friendly atmosphere for the future while balancing the ecosystem. The project intended to maintain the natural harmony with nature while creating an eco-friendly model using the existing terrain. One of the ways to prevent flooding is by retaining as much water as possible within the site and then releasing it when the storm subsides. This project is an initiative towards reversing the environmental pollution caused due to industrial waste. Create an environmental friendly atmosphere for the future while balancing the eco system.
