Annotto Bay Community Centre/Disaster Relief Centre

This project was a part of an ideas competition whose brief stipulated that a community centre that can double as a disaster relief centre be designed. The idea for this project was one of expansion and contraction as well as optimum community involvement. The space is designed to grow into the various verandahs created, when the need arises for more space, by using prefabricated wall panels. These panels can then be removed when the programmatic spatial requirements contract. The idea of using the verandah as a multifunctional space is akin to the Jamaican vernacular verandah - the most multifunctional space in a Jamaican home. The verandah not only acts as a space for the program to grow into however, it also acts as a space where community comes together and where the core of the communal aspect of this project lie.
