Over the past several decades in the award-winning history of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, computation has often played a vital role in enabling the highly innovative design and technical breakthroughs that have distinguished the deeply multi-disciplinary design firm. That legacy continues today as the firm’s designers and engineers choose to engage with problems that are much more complex, leading to the development and use of computational strategies that are themselves much more innovative and rigorous.

Computational innovation is the core competency of the BlackBox team in the Chicago office, and the team is looking to grow. We have an opening for a software applications developer, a position that will be strongly oriented toward our structural engineering group, with a primary mission of creating innovative tools and methodologies that will facilitate their highly demanding project-related and research-related agendas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with our structural engineers to understand their workflows and research interests in order to understand their computational needs
  • Strategize and develop a standardized library system for organizing a suite of internally developed web-based, plugin-based, and stand-alone computational tools (both existing tools and tools to be developed)
  • Refactor and standardize the structural tools that already exist in order to integrate them into a standardized library
  • Develop new tools and methodologies for which the engineers and designers have expressed a critical need, especially related to data interoperability and various forms of simulation, optimization, visualization, and big data analytics
  • Discover new opportunities to introduce innovative tools and methodologies for which a need has not even been expressed yet
  • In collaboration with our graphic design team, develop consistent UX concepts for application across all the various tools

Job Requirements

  • An advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, or other related area of study preferred

  • Fluency in at least two languages (C#,,, Python, Java, etc.) and ability to move into additional languages as needed

  • Experience in object oriented programming; web applications development; visualization programming in WebGL or gaming platforms such as Unity

  • Ability to work with the API’s of a variety of structural engineering and architectural software programs

  • Experience in database programming (SQL and NoSQL databases); database mining and analytics

  • Strong background in mathematics

  • Additional desirable skills/ knowledge: UI/ UX development, Programming for distributed parallelized computing; familiarity with Virtual Machine techniques, Linux programming, Familiarity with various open-source programming platforms, Familiarity with graph databases, graph analytics, and visualization, Significant background in statistical analysis concepts
