Core activities involve graphic design for architectural marketing, including graphics used in proposals, qualification books, presentations, brochures, and other collateral. Examples of tasks include cover design, info graphics, organization charts, proposal layouts, book and brochure layouts. The Graphic Design Coordinator works closely with Marketing Department professionals, SOM Partners, Directors, Associate Directors, and other Design Studio staff to pursue new work, promote past work, and communicate the firm’s expertise and design ethos.

General responsibilities include:

  • Assist in preparing architectural qualifications, proposals, and competitions.
  • Create graphics that are clear, creative, and distinctive.
  • Create PowerPoint (or InDesign-based) shows for interviews and business development presentations.
  • Learn and promote SOM’s portfolio of projects.
  • Implement marketing strategy, in collaboration with others.

Position Context:

SOM’s New York Marketing Department typically has a staff of 7, including 2 staff that cover Education, Health, and Science. A Marketing Coordinator for Education, Health, and Science is currently in place. The Graphic Design Coordinator will be expected to work in close collaboration with the Marketing Coordinator for Education, Health, and Science.


Education: Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree. A graphic design degree or other graphics-related qualification is a plus. Relevant degrees and course work include Graphic Design, Liberal Arts, Architecture, Fine Arts, and Journalism/Communications.

Expertise: A creative and skilled eye for graphic design and presentation is essential. An ability to write well and recognize good writing is very helpful.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in InDesign is essential. The ability to use Powerpoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other presentation and graphic tools is critical.

Experience: 1-3 years of experience

Motivation: Individual must be hard-working, take ownership of their work, have a high standard for presentation and preparation of materials, and be an organized professional who is motivated, curious, and excited about architectural design.
