Adjunct Professor, Interior Design: Professional Practice and Practical Applications for the Interior Design Professional

The mission of the School of Visual Arts BFA Interior Design is to educate the next generation of interior designers with special emphasis on the conceptual, creative and design leadership aspects of the interior design profession over routine practice.

SVAID is seeking an Interior Designer or Architect specializing in Interior Architecture and Interior Design to join our award-winning faculty as a part-time professor. The position posting is for the Undergraduate 4th Year Senior Courses, Interior Design: Professional Practice and Practical Applications for the Interior Design Professional. Each course spans 1 semester and meets three (3) hours per session for fifteen (15) sessions.

IDD-4030
Interior Design: Professional Practice
Fall 2017 semester: 3 studio credits

The course will explore the various topics that are essential to the professional practice of interior design. Through reading, writing and discussion, students will become familiar with real-world practice aspects of the profession from making personal career choices to building an interior design business to leading a project team. They will become familiar with ethics, contracts, billing, financial management, project management, marketing and business development. Students will learn that the business aspects of interior design go hand in hand with the creative processes of interior design.

IDD-4040
Practical Applications for the Interior Design Professional
Spring 2018 semester: 3 studio credits

The course will continue investigations from IDD-4030 Interior Design: Professional Practice. Opportunities are almost unlimited for interior designers who differentiate themselves in today’s world of innovation and competitive advantage. In this course, students will be exposed to what it takes to be competitive within the interior design and building industries. What does it mean to be a professional? Guest speakers will assist in discussion of available job and career options in interior design and related fields. Students will prepare both short- and long-term strategies for achieving a personal career plan. They will also prepare portfolios, resumes, introduction letters, etc., in order to be ready to enter the job market on graduation.

Requirements/ Preferences:

- BFA or MFA or its equivalent in interior design, architecture or a related field

- College-level teaching experience

- NCIDQ certification or registered architect or its equivalent

- Strong skills/knowledge in the professional practice aspects of building design and construction

- Experience in professional practice applications within an interior design/architecture practice
