Village Health Works (VHW) is a joint American-Burundian NGO based in Kigutu, Bururi Province whose mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment while treating the root causes of illness, poverty, violence, and neglect in collaboration with those we serve. VHW’s approach integrates clinical services with education, food security, economic development, environmental protection, music and the arts.

Village Health Works has embarked on an ambitious project to build a District Level Hospital that will be a foundation for educational, training and research programs.   The 150-bed facility will provide comprehensive medical care focusing on establishing surgical and obstetrical services in the region and developing the capacity to provide specialty clinical services not available in Burundi.

We are currently finalizing the terms and conditions of a Design and Build contract with the Swiss-owned, Rwandan-based construction company ROKO Construction Limited (ROKO).  ROKO has been engaged with this project for over a year and has already completed site establishment work.

Position Overview

We are seeking a licensed professional architect with 10 years experience to serve as our ‘Client Representative’ through the completion of the construction of the hospital.  The candidate will reside full-time on the VHW campus in Burundi through the construction of the hospital, which is anticipated to conclude in 2019.

Liaises with:

  • Senior VHW Leadership (Clinical Director of Kigutu Hospital Project, CEO and Burundi Country Director). 
  • ROKO construction team and leadership.
  • Architectural and Engineering Design consultants from the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • To act on behalf of VHW to ensure the conditions of the construction contract with ROKO are delivered.
  • To provide technical advice and clear, written guidance to VHW management on key decisions regarding the construction process of the hospital.
  • Supervise, assign duties and delegate authority to all local or international project assistants and inspectors working on behalf of VHW.
  • To advise VHW management of any forecasted delays, construction quality concerns, managerial or budget issues that must be raised by ROKO.


  • Architect or engineer with 10 years experience in construction project management.
  • Experience in managing the financial budget for a major construction project.
  • Fluency in English is required and fluency in French is preferred.


  • Desire to work with vulnerable, rural, under-served populations
  • Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa or other developing country context. Professional experience working in Burundi a plus. Team oriented – collaborative, communicative, respectful and with a positive attitude
  • Superior organizational, communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
