L'Observatoire International, award-winning architectural lighting design firm, seeks a full -time ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING DESIGNER to join our team.

We are a New York City-based lighting design office collaborating with prominent architectural firms world-wide on projects of the highest caliber.

Candidate should have experience working within a team, working on a full spectrum of lighting projects and all phases of work.  Position requires a strong sense of detail, extensive knowledge of available lighting equipment and how it works, skills to analyze and mock-up unique lighting situations, and creative problem solving abilities. 


  • Masters degree (MS or MFA) in lighting is required
  • Ideal candidate has ~5 years experience
  • Sensitivity and appreciation for design aesthetics (of all kinds)
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with all architectural phases (SD through CA) 
  • Excellent proficiency in AutoCAD software
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with AGi32 software
  • Working knowledge of Rhino or other 3D modeling software 
  • Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions based on changing conditions
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at various stages of design 
  • Excellent organizational skills: prioritization, scheduling, time management
  • Strong analytic skills, an attention to detail
  • English fluency required
  • French, Japanese or Chinese (Mandarin) language ability a plus 


  • Lighting design solutions as per client brief, budget and relevant standards
  • Attend client and design team meetings and prepare presentations to clients
  • Develop lighting design solutions with calculations, construction of temporary mockups
  • Create CAD layouts, lighting details, and other visual materials
  • Fixture specifications and schedules, research fixture alternatives, review samples
  • Lighting control equipment specifications and controls schedule
  • Review cost estimates of project lighting specifications within budget 
  • Review construction progress at project site, issue field reports and punch list
  • Final aiming of light fixtures and lighting controls programming on site
  • This position offers opportunity for work-related travel and client interfacing
