Are you a creative and enthusiastic architect who has successfully led teams in delivering great commercial projects — from strategic renovations to corporate interiors?

Are you a true generalist with expertise in design as well as the technical aspects of architecture?

Are you ready to join the leadership team of a smart design firm that develops high-performance environments for corporate clients and owners?

AAI Architecture + Interior Design is seeking a Director of Architecture with commitment, enthusiasm, and expertise for an integral leadership and management role. You will be responsible for a small but growing architectural team, and you’ll be working with a great group of people every day, in a studio environment, solving actual problems from design issues to code compliance.

You’ll have hands-on involvement with project process and delivery, as well as talent development. In addition to your firm-wide responsibilities, you will also be running specific projects as the senior project manager. We will expect you to be billable and contribute not only to annual firm revenues, but also to our overall goals of building relationships, addressing challenges, and designing solutions.

You will have significant experience in design, documentation, and delivery of architectural services for innovative commercial clients in the San Francisco Bay Area, with an emphasis on San Jose and Silicon Valley. You will design with imagination and manage to achieve constructibility. Your portfolio will include ground-up projects and renovation of exterior and interior spaces for properties that are being repositioned in the real estate market. You will be a practice leader in your current firm, with experience managing an architectural team or group, as well as responsibility for helping to grow a successful practice.

Additional requirements include:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Architecture

  • Architectural license in California

  • At least 15 years of working experience including at least 5 years of experience in management of clients, teams, and the delivery process for commercial architectural projects

  • Strong, ongoing relationships with building departments, contractors, and consultants in the San Francisco Bay Area generally and the San Jose area specifically

  • Proven success in mentoring project teams, especially related to code requirements and constructibility

  • Ability to multi-task, balance project assignments, and keep project work flowing

  • Highly professional with business savvy and excellent communication skills, including fluency in English, both oral and written

  • Experience with communication and management technology (MS Office, Google Apps), as well as leading-edge design technology (Revit, 3D visualization, etc.)

In order to be considered for employment, applicants must be currently eligible to work in the United States and should be able to travel within the USA.

Bonus Points

  • Prior experience managing an architectural studio or practice group with at least $1.5M in revenue

  • Strong experience with LEED design

  • NCARB certification

  • Experience with financial and project management systems such as Ajera, Deltek Vision, or Cosential
