Salary:$34.15 - $41.50/hour; $5,919.00 - $7,193.00/month; $71,032.00 - $86,320.00/year

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) position and it is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

The candidate selected for this Temporary position will be required to participate and be successful in the 5278 Planner II examination and then selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for Permanent appointment.

Under general direction, the Planner II performs mid-level planning work in land use, zoning, urban design, code enforcement, historic preservation, environmental planning, and other related planning fields.

The core work of the Current Planning Division is the processing of discretionary permits and case applications within a specific geographic area of the City in conformance with the City’s long-range planning goals. The Planner II is responsible for reviewing building permit applications and a variety of land use applications for compliance with the Planning Code, the Residential Design Guidelines (for projects in Residential Districts) and other relevant urban design policies, and with an understanding of historic preservation policies, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Examples of land use applications reviewed include: conditional use, variance, discretionary review, historic preservation, condominium conversions and lot subdivisions, shadow analysis, cellular antennae, and miscellaneous permits referred from other City agencies. The Planner II provides information on planning policies and procedures, and has considerable contact with representatives of government, civic and business organizations, and the general public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years (4,000 hours) verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in city, regional, urban or transportation planning, urban design, historic preservation, architectural or environmental review or other related field; OR
  2. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in City, Regional, or Urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies AND one (1) year (2,000 hours) verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in city, regional, urban or transportation planning, urban design, historic preservation, architectural or environmental review or other related field; OR
  3. Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in City, Regional, or Urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, or Envionmental Studies
