Valparaiso Footbridge

This steel footbridge was designed for an open competition organized by Universidad Tecnica
Federico Santa Maria. Its main building sits on top of a small hill facing the Pacific Ocean,
between the towns of Viña del Mar and Valparaiso. The brief was to design a footbridge and
a new gate house for the campus. Because of its historical context our idea was to meet the
requirements of the commission with a very simple and clean proposal that would not rivalize
with the existing architecture.
An easy to mount structure was also one of our main concerns, thus we designed an inhabitable
truss girder resting over piers with integrated stairs and ramps at each side of the highway.
The diagonals in the structure were set following the structural efforts diagram, with
more frequency near the ends and less in the middle. The steel structure could be placed or
temporarily removed with a truck mounted crane.
