Il Complesso della Basilica

Vicenza, Italy is a town highly saturated with Palladian architecture. The town is centered around a trio of piazze and the Basilica Palladiana. Il Complesso della Basilica is a multi-use building, placed in this historical context to serve as a civic center, commercial hub, and exhibition space. The Complesso is designed as both an addition and an homage to Palladio's work.

Designed over the course of an abbriviated six week studio during a three month study abroad program, the trapezoidal building employ Palladio's idea of irregular geometries. The unique building shapes create a centralized piazza with an outdoor amphitheater, public seating, commercial activity, and space for the biweekly outdoor market. Overhead, bridges spac the distance between the new addition and the historic Basilica, a physical reminder of the connections between past and present.

Il Complesso della Basilica strives to make connections between old and new. The buildings use a material palate reminiscent of the Basilica Palladiana, the piazze are reformed to better connect to the existing historical context (the Basilica, historic church, and columns), and the exhibit space physically connects to its inspiration.
