Los Angeles Federal Building Cafeteria Remodel LEED GOLD

Construction is now complete for the Cafeteria at the Los Angeles Federal Building that is located at: 300 N. Los Angeles St., Los Angeles, California. The Sustainable Cafeteria project involves remodeling a portion of the second floor surrounding and overlooking the two-story atrium lobby, and it includes a full commercial kitchen, exhibition cooking line, servery with coffee/smoothie bar, soup and salad bars, and dining area overlooking the atrium lobby on three sides.

The cafeteria is envisioned as a showcase of sustainable technologies in its design, construction and operation. Sustainable principles include energy and resource efficient kitchen equipment, energy efficient lighting and controls, use of sustainable materials, energy and resource efficient mechanical systems and achievement of LEED Gold Certification. Operations will incorporate healthy eating choices and organic alternatives will be the norm, including a strong preference for locally-sourced food products. A recycling and composting program will minimize waste going to landfills.

The cafeteria was envisioned as an alternative to the traditional institutionalized dining often seen in older federal buildings. Varying seating options were incorporated to provide alternative experiences, high counter tables for on-the-go eaters and low table and banquette seating offering flexible table arrangements and a more contemporary restaurant experience. Curvilinear ceilings guide visitors to the various sections and are visible from the entrance lobby below. Seating areas overlook the atrium entrance lobby of the building making its location readily apparent to the more than 1400 visitors each day and enhancing the first impressions of the lobby and welcoming the public.
