My studio project right now is to design an Elementary School in a slightly urban setting (ie. in a city, but with potential to have four facades, the surrounding buildings range from 100 to 200 feet). I am working on a precedence study but have not been able to find really great schools. I was curious if anyone could point me in the right direction. It would be best if:
a) the school was urban
b) the school was an elementary school (not necessary, but no universities)
c) there were strong ideas or definitive aspects about the building
and arch record puts out a schools-focused issue every year, as well as a special issue all about schools. the most recent special issue 'schools of the 21st century', had some interesting stuff, including the results of a 'redesign your school' competition in which students partnered with designers.
something to look for, though not specifically elementary: the friends school in d.c. by kieran timberlake.
Herman Hertzberger's primary schools might be worth a look. The concepts he puts forth are well documented and widely published. His website. It has photos diagrams and some floor plans for many types of elementary education (some combined with housing). You can get a feel for his philosophy from his book Lessons for Students in Architecture where he gets more in depth about what he is trying to do.
office formerly known as coelecanth does great schools in japan. they have flash site so can't link directly to project, but the utase elementary school is very good. they did the master plan for the area as well, though that is not as succesful.
the surviving members of original coelecanth group still have office, though their work is not as fresh. check here
Try The Decorated Diagram by Klaus Herdig, there is a useful comparison b/w 2 schools. Although, imo the diagrams in the book are much more fun to look at.
there was a school i saw here not long ago. with a broken circular plan partially two floors. i think it was in germany. europe for sure. sort of looked like east german era planning with beautifully left open outdoor space. i don't remember it was new or 60's work.
well not much info but... holz? i think it was in news section.
tezuka kindergarten is awesome awesome building, btw. i got to tag along when archinect-master mason white went with his students. tezukas were there too, explaining the cool details. seriously one of my favorite recent buildings in tokyo. much better than prada. like totally way better even.
