Employers and Facebook

Do employers "snoop" around on Facebook to get a better idea of who applicants are?

There seems to be a trend in which people change their names (i.e. use there middle name as their last) to avoid coming up on Facebook searches but would it be less benificial to be unsearchable? Or would it make more sense to just clean up your Facebook and make yourself readily, yet professionally, searchable?

Yes, they snoop. Clean up your page make it something to be proud of and all problems are solved!

There's no such thing as privacy anymore, particularly with social media.  I wouldn't trust Mark Zuckerburg as far as I could throw him.

The problem with the employers trying to snoop around before hiring someone is a bit off in my opinion. If there are others with the same name than you and the employer has never seen your face, how he can actually sort out for sure? Should we include a p.s. saying “oh by the way I don’t have a fb etc.” ?

Of course they snoop around but who cares? After all we have all the privacy settings. When people look up my name they only see my profile picture, the cover photo and subscriptions. Sometimes I intentionally make some posts public such as the cool videos I watch on TED.

i suggest everyone to do a google search with your email addresses and full names to see what comes up... Many of you might be surprised to know what an open book the net seems to be
