Bad Grades....HELP

HannahLay

I receive my results in in two days and I'm really stressing out. I had a really bad three years at university, I chose the wrong university for myself and honestly I lacked so much motivation, had some personal issues (e.g. death in the family and some other issues). I'm a hard working individual, before my degree I completed a foundation diploma coming out with a distinction. So I genuinely just had a horrible three years at the university I went to. But regardless, It is on me.

I am curious, should I resit my last two years at a different university to make up for the grades? I'm sure I'm either going to get a third or maybe a 2:2 if I'm lucky. Will my grades make a really big difference in continuing with this career path? I looked into masters programs and I need at least a 2:2 but Middlesex university states they take three years of experience as well instead. I'm not sure what to do, should I redo the two years or just find a job? If I were to redo the two years I'd do it at the university where I got my foundation diploma from.

Not to sound opportunistic but to be fair, your personal issues should be highlighted to your future employers as an entirely legitimate reason why you didn't fare well with your results. I wouldn't worry otherwise if your folio can make up for the results assuming you're continuing your education into M.Arch?

My old tutor from the AA (and owner of a practice) said grades don't matter as much as you think. It's more about the portfolio and the person. If you were to re-do two years how much would that cost you? A lot I would assume. I wouldn't even consider it if I got a 2:2

Life is too short to fret -

Which uni did you attend for part 1? I have visited many UK part 1 schools and some very dysfunctional so fit may be a issue -

There is lots of flexibility on entry standards and many universities - not the Bartlett but any that you are looking at with entry standard 2.2 -

What are your plans for your year out? Don't redo your 2 years - if you wish go and do a 1 year masters before you undertake your part 2 - the fees for 1 year masters are generally 6-7K for home UK, class sizes much smaller and allows you to flourish - you could then apply to any school with this degree representing your best foot forward - with a distinction you could get into any school no matter what your first degree was -

Alternately try for a part 2 equiv overseas - Delft or Germany -

good luck -

Sorry for the silly question but I was under the impression I had to take a masters before my part two anyway? I'm just worried I wont get into any masters programs with the grades I have?

No - normal path is Part 1, Year out in practice, (MArch) Part 2, Year out in practice then you could undertake part 3 -- what I am discussing is taking a 12 month masters (non part 2) to improve your study results - You could take Bartlett - or the hundreds of other degrees that will introduce more specialist study be it sustainability, digital, or urban or history - what ever area you think you excel.

Entry requirements for Masters (non-part 2) are generally less - with student numbers being down this year you still could apply for most if not all Masters in UK for sept entry.

Oh I understand now, to search for these programs where would be a good place to look? I tried searching 12 month masters into google but I'm not having much luck. Thank you so much for your help by the way, I really appreciate it. And to answer your first question, I went to Kent university.

What do you enjoy? What are your strengths? What type of practice would you like to work in after uni? What area of the country would you like to live in? UKPass which is part of UCAS has a good start site https://www.ucas.com/ucas/postgraduate/choosing-postgraduate-course
