Architecture Technology Vs Architecture Design

aws123

Hello,

We are having the option of choosing between a specialist in design in architectural vs a specialist in technology in architecture. Can someone explain to me the difference between the two fields? What different career paths does each program lead to? What knowledge will I gain from each program.

Note: This is an undergrad program in Canada at UofT so it's just 4 years and not a bachelor in architecture.

this is a shot in the dark, but maybe the technology person ends up trying to get something done, while the design person tries to prevent anything from getting done.

Technology is more technical such as systerms and structures , where design is more creative and theory and studio based. Generally the design is a pre professional to prepare for graduate school and the tech is more to prepare you to become a technologist

The real question is what is the difference in curriculum?

I've never heard these terms used with undergrad degrees... must be a Canadian thing.

It's been pointed out to the OP before that UofT's bachelor program is not an architecture degree and moreover, a pretty poor design degree at that. What they need to do is see which of the two options will get them the best range of projects so that they can hopefully build a decent enough portfolio in order to get into a graduate program. This program is notorious for graduates who are completely unprepared for work in architecture.

@Beepbeep

So what does a technologist do? Does he design the building or the technical stuff in the building?

@non_sequitur it's a new specialist program introduced just a few weeks ago so we can't tell whether it is good or not as of yet. One thing to point out though is that there is much less history classes now. Nevertheless, do you know what a technologist is? What's the difference between an architect and an architect technologist?

^one is bound to be draftsman while the other has the ability to pursue a license and practice architecture. But first you need the ability to qualify for an M.arch.

You don't need a university degree to be a arch-tech. Most colleges offer this in 2-yr diplomas.
