Erno Goldfinger 2 willow road?

fedster

Hello,

I am new on this forum, so I have no idea whether this is the right place to post a question this specific, but I feel completely lost and I really would like to have an answer! I don't think yahoo answers would have been a better option, so here is my question:

Today I went to visit 2 Willow road (London), a house build by architect Erno Goldfinger. It was great, quirky, modular, fun and all that. One thing especially impressed me. The flooring was part hardwood, and part.... something else. No one there could quite tell me what it was. I believe is some sort of hard plastic tiles (no linoleum), I know this sounds awful, but considering that the building was built in the 30's, it aged pretty well. In some places you couldn't even see that they were tiles because they were so worn off, so it kind of looked like resin. I thought it was a very cool effect, and no where on the internet I can find what those tiles could possibly be! I am always searching for good alternatives to expensive hardwood or resin flooring, and this looks like it could be one, does anyone have any idea what they could be? I know probably none of you have seen them, but any guess is welcome!

Possibly rubber tiles? I have rubber tiles from the 1950's in my house and they feel very hard and slick like plastic now, not at all like the softer rubber tiles you can buy today.

A contemporary recommendation: cork flooring. Love mine, and it was inexpensive when I purchased it ten years ago.

I grew up in a house built in the 50's with a floor (and baseboard) that looked like that. In my case it was black linoleum. Why are you sure this isn't?

Old linoleum.  I have this on the 2nd floor of my house (built in the mid-40s). I'd love to keep it but it hasn't aged as well as in those photos.  Colloquially it's known as 'battleship linoleum.'
