Revit to Contractors?

bendita

Working on a typical design-bid-build project, three prime. Contractors would like to have our Revit model for their reference and use. Is this typical? Moreover, is this a liability issue?

An electronic release waiver has been signed by all contractors already.

This is from some time back, like 9 years+/-, but will paraphrase a guy at Gehry Technologies office who ran stuff. We asked what about legal issues with everyone working on the same model? He said something to the effect - it's relatively a new technology and practice and to be quite honest the lawyers haven't been involved yet to formulate how to address the liability issues........I have to imagine in the last decade something has come up in the form of a lawsuit and some precedent has been set?

That's true. Generally it make sense, however we are a bit concerned with the thought of being "bypassed" in a way by the contractors simply accessing the model and not consulting with the architect on issues that come up... It is nice to allow contractors to have dimensional information at their fingertips without any reliance on us.

i would release it...the idea is to make their job easier...depends on how tight your model is also...if it is a turd...its going to be useless.

As long as they understand that the model is there to assist them in understanding the contract documents and IS NOT in and of itself a contract document you should be fine. The model simply assists them in understanding design intent, but is not to be consulted as a CD. Similar to the "don't scale the drawings" note from CAD days.

That is probably the key point. Anything helps in these cases for the contractor or even client to be able to better grasp the design and CD requirements.
