Applying for M.Arch

Hey there everyone,

I am seeking some advice in the realm of applying for a M.Arch degree.

I graduated from a relatively small college in North Carolina with a B.S. in "Appropriate Technology" (http://appropriatetec.appstate.edu/) in 2013, and since graduating I have worked two different jobs. Currently I work for a residential solar company as a system design specialist.

For the past few months I have been considering pursuing a career in architecture, and I was wondering if you all could give me some insight and advice to someone who has no background in architecture that is applying for an M.Arch.

I have taken a design drawing course before, and have some basic knowledge of construction and materials science (with some experience using various shop tools). I use Goggle Sketchup almost every day in my current job, and I feel quite confident using this type of 3D design software.

I'd be really interested to hear from those who have graduated from M.Arch programs who did not have prior experience or education in Architecture. Any tips on the admissions portfolio? Does someone with a background in renewable energy seem like a decent candidate for an M.Arch program?

Thanks for the help!
