The China Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015 Tsinghua University, in collaboration with New York-based design firm Studio Link-Arc, has unveiled its concept for Milan Expo 2015’s China pavilion. Entitled ‘The Land of Hope’, the pavilion represents fields of distinct spaces, reflecting China’s agrarian past and urban future. The structure’s iconic undulating bamboo roof, ultra-contemporary yet exquisitely respectful, shelters the cultural and exhibition programs beneath. The roof uses a raised-beam technology based upon Chinese rural tradition, clad in translucent shingles opening the ‘fields’ to the sky. The ground plane is a landscape of wheat from which a matrix of LED stalks emerges, seamlessly progressing from the natural to the futuristic. Wandering through interactive installations from 40 Chinese provinces, visitors are guided up a gently sloping stairway to view the LED matrix from above, and emerge to an open balcony above the bamboo roof offering expansive views of the Expo grounds. Striking in its poetic simplicity, “The Land of Hope” seeks to express harmony between natural landscape and city skyline, and thus announces itself as the centerpiece of Milan Expo 2015.
