monterey

Hi all. Is it possible/doable to work part time (20 h/week) in a small firm while in a funded history/theory PhD at an ivy league school? Thanks.

Yes, it's possible and not uncommon.

That said, the more time focused on coursework, then research and writing, the better...  This translates directly into a shorter time to degree, and less chance of financial damage.

@ gruen, why? Are you in one of the programs?

@ citizen, do you now people that are doing this?

I did it, though not always as much as 20 hours (except in summers).  Often, it was fewer, and I was blessed with a very accommodating employer.  Course work plus TA'ing or RA'ing are themselves very time consuming, if you want to excel.

Again, it's possible, but not very advisable.  Your mileage may vary.
