Archinect, more reason to boycott Israeli architects?

Israeli architects must stop designing illegal settlements

ARC.PEACE has noted with dismay that Israeli architects engage in the design of illegal Jewish settlements on expropriated Palestinian land in the Occupied Territories. These activities are in clear violation of the code of ethics of the International Union of Architects (UIA) which says that “there shall be no attempt to impose solutions of one society on other societies” (article 1:2) and that professionals shall fashion an environment “expressive of the genius of the people abd reflective of the substance of their culture” (article 3).

TAMMUZ, your comments are written with almost feverish speed and desperation.  There is such thing as politics and then there is something else, maybe deeper, maybe tinged with a sense of loss  in your life.  Your earlier posts (not related to middle eastern affairs) in which you muse about your career, your sadness and depression and your attitudes about the field of architecture in general point to this lack of something missing in your life.  maybe when you come to terms with this you will find something else to obsess about.

So my fellow Americans will probably be surprised to learn that the U.S. is more or less the only country in the world which has a favorable view of Israel.

Specifically, a 2012 BBC poll found that the U.S. and Nigeria were the only countries of those polled in which the majority of people had favorable views of Israel:

Older, White American Males Are Virtually the Only People In the World Who Unconditionally Support Israel

Even with the United States, there are only certain groups which support Israel.

new poll by Pew this month shows that it is mainly Americans 50 years or older, males, conservatives and evangelicals who support Israel:

Wasn't much of a cease fire.  Sounds like Hamas used he opportunity to launch a bunch of rockets as soon as the sun set.  Didn't the propaganda groups you're copying this from tell you that?  Or is it not on-message yet to point out this is happening because Hamas doesn't want it to stop?  They'll give you something to copy/paste pretty soon.

Propoganda, you say? :

If you have ever visited a blog or on-line discussion group on the Middle East you have doubtless had the misfortune to run into them.

They are known by the language they use: depraved sexual insults, bile, bigotry, threats, disinformation and character assassination. That’s right: I’m talking about “hasbarats,” Zionist trolls who infect the Internet with hasbara, pro-Israel propaganda. Of course, mainstream media hasbarats have been around for decades, as have “hasbaratchiks,” fifth-columns in foreign governments who subvert national policies to serve Israel. The Internet, though, is the latest, some might say the greatest, propaganda playground, and Israel cannot cope with factual, passionate, well-documented stories that expose its war crimes and unrepentant criminality.

If you’ve come across a hasbarat, on-line or otherwise, you have learned that no amount of reasoned argument or intellectual maturity has any effect. That’s because hasbarats don’t care if they come across as ignorant, obnoxious, nasty or inane. All that matters for them is sabotaging criticism of Israel and support for Muslims. They’re like anti-intellectual stink bombs: designed to cause maximum discomfort but have little if any real power.

mes and unrepentant criminality.

Israel’s Internet War

by JONATHAN COOK

in Nazareth.

The passionate support for Israel expressed on talkback sections of websites, internet chat forums, blogs, Twitters and Facebook may not be all that it seems.

Israel’s foreign ministry is reported to be establishing a special undercover team of paid workers whose job it will be to surf the internet 24 hours a day spreading positive news about Israel.

Internet-savvy Israeli youngsters, mainly recent graduates and demobilised soldiers with language skills, are being recruited to pose as ordinary surfers while they provide the government’s line on the Middle East conflict

"Hasbara" courses at Israeli universities exposed in new report

Various Israeli academic institutions have introduced courses and programs on hasbara— the Hebrew-language term used to describe Israel’s attempts to re-brand its image as its occupation and military aggression makes it increasingly unpopular worldwide.

A new report from the Academic Watch Project shows that instead of promoting critical thought and inquiry, these courses at academic institutions serve to promote the policies of the State of Israel and the whitewashing of its crimes. The Academic Watch Project is a group of Palestinian students at Israeli academic institutions dedicated to exposing discrimination within Israeli academia and its connection with Israel’s military occupation and apartheid policies.

Interesting read: Portrait of a Hasbara Troll

Snippet:

In the immediate aftermath of the Israeli Navy’s massacre of 9 activists on the Mavi Marmara, I began a journalistic process of discrediting wild and fabricated claims by the Israeli Army Spokesman’s Unit about the incident. Around this time, when my blog began receiving unprecedented traffic, several hasbara trolls suddenly occupied my comments section. They have maintained a constant presence ever since, dragging the discussion into the gutter with propagandistic arguments and absurd personal attacks on me and other commenters — there isn’t much else to do when you are defending a country that behaves like Israel does.

Five Israeli Talking Points on Gaza—Debunked

Israel has killed almost 800 Palestinians in the past twenty-one days in the Gaza Strip alone; its onslaught continues. The UN estimates that more than 74 percent of those killed are civilians. That is to be expected in a population of 1.8 million where the number of Hamas members is approximately 15,000. Israel does not deny that it killed those Palestinians using modern aerial technology and precise weaponry courtesy of the world’s only superpower. In fact, it does not even deny that they are civilians.

Israel’s propaganda machine, however, insists that these Palestinians wanted to die (“culture of martyrdom”), staged their own death (“telegenically dead”) or were the tragic victims of Hamas’s use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes (“human shielding”). In all instances, the military power is blaming the victims for their own deaths, accusing them of devaluing life and attributing this disregard to cultural bankruptcy. In effect, Israel—along with uncritical mainstream media that unquestionably accept this discourse—dehumanizes Palestinians, deprives them even of their victimhood and legitimizes egregious human rights and legal violations.

Rick + roll, you are a moron.  It makes me sick to see people feel the need to pick a side as if this is a football game.  Hamas bad Israel good...Israel bad Hamas good.  Shut the fuck up already.  Israel is killing innocent people and Hamas is attempting to do the same.  Both are wrong.  The people of both areas deserve better but its clear that the Palestinian people have it far worse.  You cannot possibly deny that.  Where would you feel more Safe? Since Israel is bigger and stronger than Hamas I would expect them to try and use restraint   Their lack of restraint IMO makes them a complete shame to humanity.  They also have way more power to broker a peace deal but they are unwilling to do so.

jla-x. it is very likely that this is Rick + roll's job. I'm not joking; I've made a reference here to trolls being employed to pedal Israel's side.

I've asked you to look at the even wider context - why is this going on, what is Gaza, who are the Palestinians, who are the Zionists- but you don't want to, jla-x.

anyway, watch this as well

UK Jewish MP: Israel acting like Nazis in Gaza

actually its a very touching speech and underlines the tragedies that the jews had to suffer at the hands of the nazis and the suffering the palestinians have to suffer at the hands of the israelis. again, i believe the jewish people have been victimized by Zionism - a ethno-nationalistic ideology alien to the jewish religion- after they were victimized by Nazism.

why do the Palestinians have to bear the brunt of the pathological outcomes of European racism?

That's not what you are arguing.  To argue for archinect to return to its previous state is one thing, that's a valid argument,  but to argue that it's ok to blow up kids so that you can win an argument  with the goal of "returning archinect to its original state" is a far more disgusting and anti-intellectual thing to do.  I would prefer to make fun of Patrick Schumacher and to talk about how stupid NCARB is, but this forum is not mine or yours.  I wish Tammuz would frame this topic in a way more relevant to architecture/urbanism...  There are architectural issues in here...I also wish he would look at this issue in a broader more anthropological/sociological way but that's his/her choice.

This is a democratic site and you can start a different thread if you want and out compete this one.  Thought us Americans supported free press and democracy.  I hate this idea of protectionism and regulation in the practice of architecture and I also hate this idea of protectionism and regulation on archinect.

Come off it, JLA. We both know neither side is in the right. So why even try and have a proper discourse. At the end of the day, there is always going to be single-sided arguments. It's kind of like trying to change a republicans opinions about obama-care.

firstly, jla-x, you;re too nice and you can't see that Rick+roll is playing you. She or he is playing the "both sides are wrong"card to regain your sympathy - because she or he knows where you stand. However, this guy or gal is without doubt pro-Zionist - she or he has proves it elsewhere. But, given the overt evidence of Israel's atrocities that she or he will not be able to justify...she or he resolves to the second best  ploy so as to keep on demonizing the Palestinian side in the least/

Now ..about your post...jla-x, unfortunately the repellent incidents happening in Gaza at the hand of Israelis (you can check the civilian statistics yourself...and you can compare it to the Israeli civilian casualties to see who is deliberately targetting civilians) and the unfairness of the overall situation - and the general ignorance of Americans when it comes to the Middle East because of the bias of the media there as well as the support of your own government (yes, your money is complicit in the murder of these kids, i'm sorry to say) - compels me to bring this here and to ask Archinect to boycott Israel.

You might say, but what does this have to do with Archinect and architecture...topically speaking? What do musicians have to do topically with Israel? Artists, scientists, Steven Hawking, Nobel laureates, companies and firms around the world, the RIBA...etc etc? Yet, they boycott.

It is  pointless to say that the Boycott Israel movement doesn't belong here because its not topical....the Boycott Israel belongs everywhere - all cultural, professional, business, communal enterprises and organizations as well as at the level of the individual- because this is a humanist peaceful movement to economically, militarily, logistically disable an ongoing genocide. I'm not telling Archinect to launch rockets at Israel for goodness's sake; I'm just inviting it to boycott that racist colony.

And there were a few posts here that touched on how planning policies are being used by that apartheid state of Israel to oppress, incarcerate and eventually eliminate the presence of Palestinians on their homeland.

Tammy, there you go again with the paranoia. No, I'm not any of those guys you think I am. They're probably at home drinking a beer without a care in the world. Why would I want to regain JLA's sympathy( in case you didn't notice my username is rick Troll) I could care less about what he thinks. Like I said I want some good old fashion architecture discussions to happen. I've never had to join because usually a quick search found me the answers I was looking for. Unfortunately, this keeps thread keeps popping back up.

I didn;t say you were the other guys, troll, I said there was an army of trolls. And you seem to be leading at the moment.

now, to jla-x ..."both sides are wrong" is tantamount to saying well, fine they are both morally equally culpable ...so their culpabilities cancel each other out, so whatever......without thinking about whose civilians are getting killed in a proportion of what..i'm guessing here but... 80 Palestinian civilians to 1 Israeli? how about proportion of children? 300 to 0?

saying "both sides are wrong" is tantamount to saying...well, both of their histories are as crappy and murderous as the other's. Is that really true? Did both sides colonize each others lands, have a long list of massacres training behind them, or being undertaken right now or being prepared for in the future? Did both sides starve each other off, turn the other side's water off, routinely assassinate people from the other side? Do they both humilate each other at their respective checkpoints, force each other's pregnant women to give birth htere? Do they both train their dogs to attack the other at the sound of a religious exclamation?

no, both sides are not "both wrong". this is an obfuscating, complicit, morally despicable claim that makes the weight of the feather in terms of guilt equal to the weight of a boulder.
