NK Architects is pleased to announce the selection of Hudson County Community College Library Building as a winner of New Jersey Business & Industry Association’s New Good Neighbor Award of 2015. The Award recognizes projects for their economic benefit/job creation, architectural merit, and community involvement.

The new library and academic building for Hudson County Community College, designed by NK Architects, will be an important addition to the Journal Square campus as well as Jersey City. The new library, on the first two floors of the six-story building, will be over 30,000 square feet, offering students and faculty a modern and progressive center for learning. It is planned to house traditional printed collections as well as e-books and digital multi-media supported by designated computer stations, copy centers, wireless internet service and power supplies for laptops.

Students will have personal and quiet places to study along with several enclosed work rooms for more collaborative group activities. Several information stations are planned throughout the library for easy access and assistance to all students. A large two-story reading room will visually connect the students to the Jersey City streetscape. It will have casual seating and a coffee bar to offer students and faculty a place to read and congregate before and after classes.

The three floors above will have approximately ten classrooms per floor with designs ranging from traditional learning to computer labs to tiered lecture classrooms. The sixth floor, which is stepped back from the street, will have a rooftop terrace and large lobby/exhibition space for progressive art installations and student gatherings. The adjourning three classrooms to this gallery, which will be flexible in size with moveable partitions, will also provide the College with a large venue for special events and programs.

The exterior of the building is predominantly brick and is designed with a strong traditional reference to the early century architecture found in Journal Square. The library has large two-story arches, granite accents and complimenting metal panels for a contemporary edge. The building is designed and will be constructed for LEED Certification.

Hall Building Corp. was nominated for this project and will be recognized as the Builder of this award-winning project at NJBIA’s awards luncheon on Friday, June 5 at Forsgate Country Club. NK takes great pride in being the Architects of this project and congratulates our staff for a job well done.
