airBaltic

The design for the new airBaltic terminal comes from one of the most fundamental symbols of freedom from gravity: the cloud. Inspired by views of the Baltic where there is a dialogue between the vast expanses of water and the datum of clouds suspended above, the airport merges seamlessly with the existing airBaltic brand identity. The airBaltic terminal embodies this connection between the sea and the sky and reinterprets the experience of flying. When viewed from above or from the city beyond, the image of the cloud within the Riga landscape will become a highly distinctive global landmark for the Baltic region.

The cloud-like environment is created by delicate layers of a repeated design module. The canopy is composed of an innovative structural system of 3×3x3 meter steel framed modules that are designed to maintain a stable structure as more modules are added. The PSI Matrix System (© of Psi Design Co., Ltd) generates its structural ability through geometry, avoiding the unnecessary need for more material. Each module can be customized with attached panels such as PVC, ETFE or water collection systems allowing for a sustainable roof system.
