57 Irving Place is located at the edge of the Gramercy Park Historic District, home to some of the most distinctive residential buildings in New York City.  This new refined glass structure draws inspiration from the scale and texture of this neighborhood, translating local design strategies into a contemporary language that employs new technologies and material usages.  The building envelope is designed with what we call a “living façade,” where the internal planning concepts give shape to the face of the building.  Projecting bays key to the interiors, shifting locations with the plan layouts.  Their vertical stacking and connective metal tracery indicate that they are single or duplex units.  The glass has properties that change color and transparency depending on lighting conditions.  Automatically operated windows project straight out from the façade for airflow on all four sides.
