Arroyo Lookout

This award-winning garden integrates a Modernist home with an 1890s landscape.

Requested design elements included an outdoor dining area and deck, and the creation of a useable and enjoyable back yard space.

The original porch was demolished and replaced with a more contemporary stair case that opened the home to expansive views of the valley, while creating a more dramatic entry to the back of the home and opening up the entire space. Concrete pavers were added to help draw the eye out to the view and an existing staircase system. The staircase was expanded and new concrete was carefully and painstakingly matched to the existing concrete in order to provide seamless integration of the new design. The new deck area that surrounds an existing tree includes a dining table and chairs and provides bench seating around the perimeter for party guests. A water feature was added under the existing tree to bring pleasant sound to the area while accenting the surrounding garden. Draining into a long, copper pipe that divides the deck carries water into a secondary wall fountain below the dining area. Colorful and bold succulents are used as primary planting in order to enhance the bold and striking lines of the mid-century home. The completed design creates an entirely new area in the back of the home that accents the architecture and achieves the motive of creating an enjoyable dining area and enhancing the circulation around the property.
