Universiade Culture Park 2011 in Shenzhen, China

Universiade Culture Park is a renovation project to transform a bunch of old factory buildings into a recreation centre for the 26th Summer Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen is China's first Special Economic Zone with only 30-year history. Since it is a city of immigrants with diverse cultures, it becomes the youngest and the most vigour metropolitan in modern China.
The site, as part of the Universiade Green Park, is right beside the main stadium of Universiade Centre in suburb Longgang District and opposite to the Universiade Village. The buildings are also as a gateway from downtown Shenzhen to the Universiade Centre. All facades are united with 600mm-wide modular green strips. Green colours are inspired by the theme colour of Universiade 2011 which upholds the core value of the Universiade to promote Shenzhen’s youthfulness, creativity and harmony between man and nature.
Three green colours with various tones are selected carefully and arranged from dark to light vertically throughout all facades in order to merge into the surrounding green park. Bright orange and white squares scatter around the greens symbolizing one of the most popular local flowers Pyrostegiaignea. The renovated buildings, already well known as ‘The Greens’ by local residence, have been the landmark of Longgang district since its unique and dynamic colours.

The colourful signage with green facades highlight the Universiade and celebrate the vigor and wonderful life of college students from the globe.

Within the compound, all facades show dramatic and dynamic colour effects while exposing to the subtropical sunshine in Shenzhen.

The buildings, integrating into the surrounding environment, the grass, trees, the sky and clouds, have been transformed from abandoned factories into part of the natural landscape.

Local flower Pyrostegiaignea looks like traditional Chinese firecrackers hanging down from high wall, representing celebration of joyfulness. All facades are inspired by the bright orange colour with green vertically laid as Pyrostegiaignea.

Main entrance to the Universiade Culture Park is opposite to the north gate of the Universiade Village.

Longgang is about 40-minite drive from downtown shenzhen. It is the greenest district of Shenzhen.

The Culture Park locates to the south-west of the Universiade compounds.

Existing site with several abandon factory buildings is at the foot of mountian.

Existing buildings are typical industiral factories with 10-15 year history. Since the rapid unbanisiation, the existing factories have been relocated outside Shenzhen area.
