Wembley WC's

Public conveniences on Empire Way, Wembley, hark back to the days when public toilets were civic buildings that inspired pride in a place.

The freestanding pavilion sits in a pedestrianised area outside Wembley Stadium. The building commands a presence at the high point of the surrounding topography. Each of the building’s sides is subtly differentiated in response to the specific contexts, whether a busy road or public space.

The robust concrete base of the building is crowned by a filigree metal screen, which allows in light and ventilation whilst maintaining privacy. The perforated water-cut screen becomes a glowing lantern during the evening.

The building is an elegant addition to the public realm and a sculptural object in the wider landscape.
