‘Self-Ornamentalize’ is a multidisciplinary installation

‘Self-Ornamentalize’ is a multidisciplinary installation, challenging the resources limitation and experimenting on material manipulation, through a custom computational design of structure, skin and ornamentation.

A collaborative installation work by VINN PATARARIN brand (Vinn Chokkhatiwat – Architect and designer, Patararin Pongprasit – fashion designer) and FAHPAV (Paveena Amornkul – architect and digital designer) held by Compeung, the artist in residency program located at DoiSakt, a sub-urban village of Chiangmai, a Northern province of Thailand. The exploration based on a curiosity of sub-urban culture in post-modern era through local crafts, materials on site specification came the realization to the fact that local craft and material such as hand weaving products and natural local-grown materials are fading caused from the expansion of the city and occupation changes. From that, the area itself has shown an obvious large amount of used plastic products presented around the locals, discovered that plastic products are actually the true local materials of this present day. Plastic bottle was chosen as a primary material after many explorations because of its properties of being transparent, self-strength and deformable shape.

After significant points discovered from the location of residency being situated next to the large lake, an attraction landmark where all local recreational activities are, along with the offering of environment such as magnificent area of water reflection, mountainscape scenery and extensive pathways on water, this site was chosen to place the installation for an intention to become a showcase for villagers to appreciated, observed and inspired.

The motif of pattern is an ongoing designs from VINN PATARARIN which experimenting on textile and architecture through human body. The motif gives capabilities of dynamic change and form manipulation. Designed globally by using computational technique calculated the pattern formation on curvature to generate form. Sourced and fabrication locally by computationally flattened 3D form to 2D drawings then transferred onto paper as guideline to trace and shape-molding manipulated plastic bottle on and later hand craft for the finishing.

A number of 850 drink bottles were recycled to a 9 x 4m installation where its serenity mirroring by lake reflection, also dispersion shadow projected on the audiences captured and triggered the understanding of villagers’ self-identity beyond current changes.

‘Self-Ornamentalize’ is an experiment in totally transformed the unawareness of locals’ identity through technology, materials and craftsmanship towards the wonder of self-discovery in post-modern era.

Additional Credits: Vinn Chokkhatiwat is a multidisciplinary architect and designer, who committed to theoretical research and experimentation across various design fields with the concern of sociology and cultural diversity. He finished his Master degree in design and contemporary technology at L’ENSCI, Les Aterlier,Paris, and he did his Bachelor degree in Architectural design in International program in Design and Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. He did an internship at Iris van Herpen, Haute Cou- ture house.

Patararin Pongprast is an artist and a designer. She was graduated from Srinakharinwirot University, a major fashion design school in Thailand and further her education at Studio Bercot in Paris. She has strong ideal about re-engaging traditional cos- tume and modern wear as art of wearing relates to identity, culture and lifestyle. She did an internship at Azzedine ALAIA and a new talented brand, Katharina Gruber.

FAHPAV, Paveena Amornkul, is an architect specialising in computational design and digital fabrication. Her principal approach on architectural design projects involves the integration of digital specialisation parallel with physical realization. She has gained a Distinction award for her MArch Architectural Design at UCL Bartlett School of Architecture in the UK, whilst studying for her BSc International programme in Design and Architecture at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, she was selected for an exchange programme in Architecture at École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville, France. She has worked as an architect since her postgraduate graduation, continuously implementing digital design within her works.

ComPeung, the first non-government artist-in-residence programme in Thailand, held by Pisithpong Siraphisut and Helen Michaelsen ComPeung is an open platform for dialogues, encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiments, exploring the interdependence between art, artists and society with our three main focuses are: environment, community, and change.
