Visitors inhabit the exterior of the pavilion as it emerges from the land, while the interior serves as a gateway portal between the Minneapolis Convention Center and the city. Visitors interact with real-time audio and visual data transmitted from the “smart buoys” in Minneapolis’s lakes. Curvilinear benches emerge from the pavilion’s interior walls, inviting visitors to relax and experience Minneapolis LakeForms. The pavilion’s form is derived from a scale model of the lakes’ underwater topography, and its placement on site preserves existing circulation patterns while also inviting visitors to interact with the installation. Custom-built “smart buoys” are placed throughout the Minneapolis’s lakes, gathering data and transmitting it via wifi to the pavilion as sensory audio and visual information. The pavilion is digitally fabricated out of 100% recycled wood-plastic composite material. The inside provides a shaded space to gather during hot summer days, and the exterior of the pavilion is a greened extension of the plaza’s lawn, providing a comfortable surface for seating and play.
