Peter Sampson Architecture Studio is a Winnipeg-based office providing full architectural and urban design services. Through institutional, commercial, and residential practice, we explore architecture’s various contractual relationships to culture, time, and ecology. Over the past fifteen years, Peter Sampson has developed projects in Ontario and Manitoba, and taught design and technology based studios at the Universities of Toronto, Waterloo, and Manitoba. Out of these academic affiliations, much of the firm’s own research into practice has developed a kind of mentorship model for the studio structure under which our projects are developed. The studio is currently comprised of eight staff which included three architects, three intern architects, one technical staff, and an administrator.
To practice through collaboration internally prepares us to collaborate externally with our clients, consultants, various stakeholders and other architects. We consult and develop our work in an integrated manner with stakeholders that seeks to raise the bar for all design discussions. In the past three years alone, we have engaged in three joint ventures for projects in Manitoba totaling $48 million dollars, all of which have been shepherded through an integrated architecture process, and have included a number of town hall type workshops with stakeholders
Firm believers in the discipline of architecture’s capacity to create the commitments to place that are necessary for successful livelihoods, we practice with the clear goal of building better places for future generations, no matter the project, or site. We prioritize integrity, economy, and sustainability believing first in the principles of balance and modesty when approaching the social and physical contexts in which our work will exist.
We have been developing innovative design strategies for housing that are based on intensive energy modeling and significant research into Net Zero Energy design. As a result of this work, Peter Sampson Architecture Studio has been a direct contributor to the national campaign to produce zero-energy residential architecture by 2030 through the CMHC’s EQuilibrium initiative, the RAIC’s 2030 Challenge, and Manitoba Hydro’s Better Buildings program.
Peter Sampson Architecture Studio is an open and flexible working environment that draws upon the expertise of talented young designers who are encouraged to explore the technical and qualitative aspects of a project through large scale physical models, digital modeling, drawing, and collage. A self fashioned workshop, the studio lends itself to a nurturing a productive relationship between architect, builder, and stakeholder.
