I got off the tram at Karlovo Náměstí and found this very elegant sign directing me to the pavilion.

And there it was - Möbius. Nonetheless, it was still a beautiful piece of work. Yuliya (the original designer of the pavilion) and I were super proud to see it in front of our eyes.

Yay ARCHIP.

There was a quick discussion about the pavilion (mostly in Slovakian so I don't know what they exactly said), and Yuliya was called up to share about her inspiration for the design. Awkward? Yes. Proud? We liked calling our pavilion as if it were a person (after all, we spend more time with it than our real friends), so we decided to continue this theme for this year. Our environmental pavilion will go by the name 'Möbius' (the pavilion's form) and have the description paRESITE (play on the words parametric, parasite, and reSITE).

The final design of Möbius was inspired by the mobius strip, a surface with only one side and only one boundary components. The semi-enclosed form protects against the harsh elements of nature while letting the gentle ones in while the triangular modules provide stability. On each trianglular module, there are 3 seperate “petals” that open and close responding to the humidity. With the help of Rhino and Grasshopper, we were able to realize the concept.

With the finalized design, the FLD students are now in the stage of fabricating the pieces of thi...
http://archinect.com/blog/article/71850236/mobius-strip Mobius Strip Jason Nam 2013-04-24T00:11:19-04:00 >2013-04-29T21:23:09-04:00
Using the triangular module system, Team A wanted the form to be based off of a Mobius strip: a surface with only one side and only one boundary components.

http://archinect.com/blog/article/71848824/team-b-s-scale-model Team B's Scale Model Jason Nam 2013-04-23T23:32:04-04:00 >2013-04-29T21:19:09-04:00
Team B (aka "Predators")

Groupie pic #2. The first solution was by "stitching" the panels together, but we realized how unstable it was (and also very ugly). We decided to go with what's best been done with any type of joint system: screws and bolts.

Groupie pic. We really need Grasshopper to speed this whole process of calculations 2. Stitching looks bad 3. Petals look neat 4. We are far from being done
http://archinect.com/blog/article/71826298/work-in-progress Work in Progress Jason Nam 2013-04-23T15:34:37-04:00 >2013-04-29T21:21:14-04:00
The second year students at ARCHIP split into two groups to further the design and make it actually buildable. Team A was working on Yuliya's design and Team B worked with Dessy's design. Both teams chose names: Team A is "Cold Pop" and Team B is "Predators." (But because I think they sound ridiculously corny and random, we will just proceed by addressing the teams as A or B.)

The 2 groups presented the progresses made on a Saturday workshop.

Team B's working models. Jason Nam 2013-03-27T08:08:20-04:00 >2013-03-27T11:52:09-04:00
The students at ARCHIP had 2 weeks to come up with design proposal for the reSITE Festival's pavilion and presented their designs to the jury - Marie Davidová, Osamu Okamura, Martin Gsandtner, Martin Šichman, and Martin Barry (we had a lot of 'Martin's). It was interesting to see how everyone had such different approaches to the design. While there were many ideas that intrigued the viewers, the jury had to decide on a winning design to actually build. The winners were:

1ST PLACE: The first place went to Yuliya Pozynich's tessellation design.

2ND PLACE: Dessislava (Dessy) Mandanska's design was chosen as the second winning proposal. Dessy's design focuses on playing with lights: the shadows created by the sunlight during the day vs. the illumination of the pavilion during the night.

Congratulations to both Yuliya and Dessy!
http://archinect.com/blog/article/69944020/ready-set-go Ready, Set, Go! Jason Nam 2013-03-23T13:59:16-04:00 >2013-04-01T23:16:54-04:00
Here is a quick recap of what has been going on with the environmental pavilion:

1. Workshops, workshops, workshops
In the course of 2 weeks, we had workshops after workshops researching types of pavilions, wood materials and their reaction to environment, fabrication techniques, and parametric programing.

Rhino + Grasshopper workshop

Teaming up with the students from LFD (codename: forest people), we went to visit their laboratories dedicated to wood research. To be honest, I thought all forestry students did was just hangout in the forest (hence the codename). It was fascinating to see how much lab research can be done with wood,

2. Design proposals

Each student at ARCHIP came up with a design proposal for the environmental pavilion and consulted with our leaders Marie and Martin. Here is an excerpt from our brief:

Students will design and build a pavilion in maximum area of 25m² and height 5m that will stand on Alšovo nábřeží in front of the AAAD. The project is led in cooperation of the Architectural Institute Prague (ARCHIP) and the University of Life Sciences Prague, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences (CZU). Our aim is to broaden the discussion on the wood's material properties in relation to environment, and if all goes according to plan, the environmental pavilion will be completed in June for the 2013 reSITE Festival.

What is reSITE? reSITE Festival is an annual event that takes place in the heart of Europe - Prague. It is a platform to exchange ideas about making cities more livable, highlighting how contemporary, collaborative design can improve life in cities.

Stay tuned with our blog to see the progress of the pavilion!
