UT Knoxville School of Architecture names Carl Lostritto as its new Director

The College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville has appointed RISD Associate Professor Carl Lostritto as its new Director.

Lostritto joins UT after ten years in Providence, where he has taught in both the B.Arch and M.Arch professional programs, in addition to serving as the graduate program director since 2017.

Lostritto, who previously held positions at the University of Maryland, Catholic University of America, Boston Architectural College, and MIT, joins the faculty with a specialization in theories about drawing and computational design. He was instrumental in the implementation of the new Computation, Technology, and Culture concentration at RISD, and has authored several essays in addition to his 2019 title Computational Drawing: From Foundational Exercises to Theories of Representation, and the forthcoming Impossible and Hyper-Real Elements of Architecture, which is due out next year.

Jason Young, professor and director of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s School of Architecture, has been named the next dean of the College of Architecture and Design effective July 1. [...] Young will succeed Dean Scott Poole, who announced in 2020 that he would step down and return to the faculty, continuing a successful 35-year career of teaching, professional practice, service, and leadership, with many accomplishments and accolades along the way.

Young will oversee the college’s four schools: architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, and design. Before the University of Tennessee, Young taught architecture at the University of Michigan, the University of California, Berkeley as the 2013 Howard Friedman Visiting Associate Professor of Practice, the Summer Institute for Architecture at the Catholic University of America, and served as a visiting professor at the Schwerpunkt Holz in Murau, Austria.

Dean searches have begun at The University of Virginia and The University of Tennessee's architecture departments

It's not every day you come across job ads for positions like university deans, but this week there have been two new searches advertised on Archinect Jobs.

The University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville, is currently seeking a new Dean of the School of Architecture. They are looking for someone "who can advance the mission and to build upon the School’s unique qualities that provide a competitive advantage among Schools of Architecture." As with most positions of this stature, the university envisions hiring an individual accomplished in academia, with experience leading a school of architecture and/or design, however, applicants coming from a professional practice background, who value academic teaching and research will also be considered for the position.

Scott Poole to step down as Dean of University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Architecture and Design

Architecture and Design Dean Scott Poole at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has announced plans to step down from his position in order to return to teaching.

A statement published by the school announcing Poole's decision to step down reads: "Poole’s 35-year career of teaching, professional practice, service, and leadership includes many accomplishments and accolades. As an academic leader, Poole developed innovative strategies to advance meaningful collaborations between design education and practice, set the context for multiple nationally and internationally recognized experiential learning projects, hired and mentored award-winning educators, and engaged the collective capabilities of faculty to create inspiring environments for design education."

NOMA, HASTINGS, and U of Tennessee announce plans for new diversity scholarship

The National Organization for Minority Architects (NOMA), Hastings Architecture, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have announced a new scholarship initiative aimed at bolstering the pipeline of students from diverse backgrounds entering architectural education.

The new Keystone Scholarship will "cover all academic costs" for an incoming student from Tennessee in the college’s School of Architecture or School of Interior Architecture each year of their education, while also providing financial support and guaranteeing a summer internship opportunity for the selected student. A statement announcing the launch of fundraising for the scholarship explains that "the full scholarship should enable the student to graduate with no academic debt."

Jason Young Appointed as New Director of the University of Tennessee School of Architecture

Jason Young has been named the new director of the School of Architecture of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He becomes acting director on August 1. Young, a researcher specializing in contemporary conditions of American urbanism, brings over twenty years of teaching experience to the College of Architecture and Design. He comes to Knoxville from the University of Michigan, where he was an associate professor in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

University of Tennessee-Designed Secondary School Opens in Haiti

McRae, together with Chris King, adjunct faculty member, taught the special studio course where an interdisciplinary team of nineteen students created the designs for the school. McRae attended the school’s grand opening in September along with Jeremy Mefford, a recent UT graduate in civil engineering who was in the class that worked on the school design.

On the bio-retention bed front, the five beds have now been planted full of native water loving goodness! The greywater bed is piped in, but can't be turned on until city ordinances allowing it have passed in June. The rainwater beds (beds 2-5) have all been planted, but won't be piped in until next week. Currently our rainwater is being diverted into a pile of gravel in the yard, but once the system is all put together all excess rainwater will eventually make it's way to through these beds!

This weekend our team hosted a "soft opening" of the New Norris House to celebrate the completion of major construction. There is lots more to do and details to resolve, but this event was a welcomed termination of two semesters of work by design|build studio/seminar participants.
