BIG’s Marknagil Education Center Breaks Ground on Faroe Islands

It seems to be big groundbreaking week for Danish firms right now: yesterday we reported about schmidt hammer lassen architects kicking off construction of their enormous International Criminal Court campus in The Hague, The Netherlands, and now we're also hearing of BIG breaking ground on the Marknagil Education Center—soon to become the biggest building on the Faroe Islands.

Together with local architects Fuglark and a team of consultants, BIG had won the competition for the 19,200 sqm / 206,667 sq ft educational facility back in 2009.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the first permanent premises of the International Criminal Court [...] took place yesterday, April 16, in The Hague, The Netherlands. Allied Works Breaks Ground on New Tasting Room for Oregon Winery

Construction has begun on a new Tasting Room for Sokol Blosser Winery in the Willamette Valley wine region. Designed by Brad Cloepfil, founding principal of Allied Works Architecture, the new building will provide a range of spaces for sampling Sokol Bosser’s wines and viewing their Yamhill County estate. One of the founders of Oregon’s wine making industry, the Sokol Blosser family has been producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and other varietals since 1978.

In 2012, the winery commissioned Allied Works to develop a master plan and design a new tasting room and event space that would be the showpiece of the 100-acre estate. The project will be the first to bring internationally-recognized, contemporary architecture to the heart of the Oregon wine country.

Construction begin on Zaha's Softbridge Building at Oxford University

Zaha Hadid visited Oxford to celebrate the start of construction works at St Antony's College.

Dubbed the 'Softbridge', the new building will be known as the The Investcorp Building on completion in the summer of 2014.

The building has been made possible through a generous donation of £11 million funded by the international alternative asset management firm, Investcorp. The guest of honour at the ground-breaking ceremony was Investcorp's Executive Chairman and CEO, Mr Nemir Kirdar.

The three-storey Softbridge building will form a suspended 'bridge' between numbers 66 and 68 Woodstock Road and provides 1,200 square metres of floor-space. Its new lecture theatre, replacing the cramped rooms where public seminars are currently held, offers 125 seats and disabled access. The building will also house a new library and purpose-built archive facility, doubling the amount of space currently available.

President Obama will speak at the official groundbreaking next week for the Smithsonian's new African American history museum in Washington, museum officials announced. The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be situated on the National Mall and is expected to be completed by 2015 at an estimated price cost of $500 million, half of which is expected to be paid by the government.
