Gensler and Moody Nolan debut terminal design for Columbus International Airport

Gensler has revealed plans for a new terminal design for John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) in Columbus, Ohio. The project replaces an existing terminal from 1958 and is aimed at enhancing the regional economy of the state’s capital in the interest of “Connecting Ohio with the World.”

Columbus-based architects Moody Nolan will join the project as a design partner. The construction is necessary to meet the demands placed on the airport by Columbus’ expected demographic change, which will see the population of what is now the Midwest’s fastest-growing city expand to over 3 million by the year 2050.

Ohio State researchers use machine learning to create 3D digital models of lost historic neighborhoods

A team of researchers from The Ohio State University has developed a machine learning technique that converts old urban maps into three-dimensional digital models. According to the team, the models could potentially revolutionize research involving historic neighborhoods and the economic impact of their demolition.

The study, recently published in the journal PLOS ON, involved extracting and digitizing data from Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. The maps, created during the 19th and 20th centuries and frequently updated, were used by fire insurance companies to estimate their liabilities in about 12,000 U.S. cities and towns.

Artist Janet Echelman’s soft-fiber Current installation premiered over the weekend in Columbus, Ohio, adding the city to a list of others to have showcased her experiments with site-specific sculptures and computational design since 2009.

Stretching to a total of 126 feet at its zenith, the 229-foot-long sculpture is made from 78 miles of twine strewn into more than 550,000 individual knots and cast from the facades of buildings located at the intersection of Gay and High Streets.

Echelman says she “absorbed” herself in Columbus’ local history for the creation of the commission, which has seen antecedents installed in Oslo, Santiago, New York, and other major metropolises on three continents so far.

U.S. Pavilion for the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale analyzes the human relationship with plastic

The United States Pavilion for the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale has been completed ahead of the event’s May 20th public opening. Organized by the Cleveland-based alternative art organization SPACES, and titled Everlasting Plastics, the exhibition seeks to explore “one of the most ubiquitous materials in our world: plastic.”

Investigating how plastic has permeated modern life, the exhibition reframes attitudes and approaches toward addressing the overabundance of plastic waste in waterways, landfills, and streets. Acknowledging the global dependence on the material, the pavilion seeks to make a case for a “profound reconsideration for how we coexist with plastics and its possibilities as an agent for change.”

Sculptor Janet Echelman will transform the skyline of Columbus, Ohio with a newly-announced commission set to debut this June.

Her soft fiber piece, titled Current, expands on past experiments with architecture and computational design and will stretch to 126 feet at its pinnacle. The 229-foot-long sculpture is made from 78 miles of twine strewn into more than 550,000 individual knots and cast from the facades of buildings located at the intersection of Gay and High Streets.

Echelman says she “drew inspiration from the evolution of downtown Columbus and its role throughout history as a place of innovation and light.” Her latest commission will be the first permanent piece to be suspended over street level, following temporary installations in Munich, Santiago, New York, and two other continents.

Adjaye Associates designs major 35-acre master plan for Cleveland waterfront

Adjaye Associates has designed a major master plan along the Cleveland riverfront in collaboration with real estate firm Bedrock. The Cuyahoga Riverfront development spans 35 acres and is described by its designers as a “15-to-20-year vision” that “prioritizes accessibility, equity, sustainability, and resilience with the development of an 18-hour, 15-minute downtown.”

Under Adjaye’s plans, the waterfront development will host over 3.5 million square feet of space, including 2,000 residential units, 850,000 square feet of office space, 12 acres of public space, and supporting hospitality, retail, and entertainment venues.

“Our redevelopment strategy for the downtown Cleveland Riverfront taps into the lost heritage of the city, establishing a new relationship between the urban core and the shore,” David Adjaye explained. “As I became more deeply immersed, the need to build a more tempered flow of movement through the city became immensely clear.”

David Adjaye selected to join Cleveland riverfront development team

Bedrock, the real estate arm of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert’s empire, said Tuesday that it added a noted architect to a team it assembled to plan and build on a large portion of land along the Cuyahoga River near downtown.

That individual is world-renowned architect David Adjaye, who will join a team of consultants, city officials, and civic organizations focused on advancing the transformation of Cleveland’s Tower City Center into a marketplace as well as the 20- to 30-year proposal to develop a 130-acre mixed-use neighborhood along the Cuyahoga Riverfront.

These plans are part of the city’s “Vision for the Valley” proposal, an initiative that serves as a roadmap for development and investment in urban infrastructure along an eight-mile stretch of the river. Adjaye’s work will have a focus on sustainability and resiliency and will include the creation of new streets, digital access, enhanced public spaces and pathways to the riverfront, and transit-oriented development.

Dave Chappelle threatened to pull his various business ventures from his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio, if the village council went ahead with a plan to build — wait for it — more affordable housing in the area.

Dave Chappelle has turned into quite the evil troll in recent years over other hot-button issues which now extend into a proposed multi-family development project in his Dayton-area hometown. Chappelle owns several small businesses in the area under a holding company called Iron Table, which he claimed are worth $65 million during the hearing on the measure Monday night.

The comedian's opposition reportedly stems from the plan's lack of sidewalks and an increased amount of traffic to the area, which is adjacent to his bucolic 39-acre estate. The proposal was passed over in the end and replaced by a previous plan that will add 143 single-family units with starting prices around $300,000, according to Rolling Stone.

Moody Nolan is donating a home to 11 different cities as part of its Legacy House Project

The firm, cofounded in 1982 by Moody’s father, Curt, and now the largest Black-owned architecture firm in the U.S., moved to refocus its giving on a more tangible outcome. The firm’s architects decided to put their money where their skills are and created the Legacy House project, a planned annual gift that will grant a free home to a family in need in one of the 11 cities where Moody Nolan has offices.

The high cost of homeownership is an increasingly large social and political issue that other architects are addressing with a variety of different experimental housing models.

Moody Nolan was compelled to the measure after re-examining the tangible impacts of its annual donations in each of the communities in which it has an office. Housing stocks in the Columbus area are at an all-time low.

The first two homes are in Ohio and Nashville, Tennessee respectively. Each property will be mortgage-free. The firm has said it would like others to take its lead in donating space in the cities they, too, called home.

HUD head Ben Carson thinks creature comforts are not for those on Section 8

As he toured facilities for the poor in Ohio last week, Mr. Carson, the neurosurgeon-turned-housing secretary, joked that a relatively well-appointed apartment complex for veterans lacked “only pool tables.” He inquired at one stop whether animals were allowed. At yet another, he nodded, plainly happy, as officials explained how they had stacked dozens of bunk beds inside a homeless shelter and purposefully did not provide televisions.

In a recent visit to a public housing facility in Columbus, Ohio, HUD head Ben Carson reiterated his stance that anyone receiving Section 8 housing vouchers or federal assistance should not get too comfortable, as this would lead them to simply want to stay in their federally provided digs. Ironically, studies have shown that for the chronic homeless population, remaining in one place is actually much cheaper for the state than having them constantly bouncing between shelters and the street once emergency room visits and legal fees are added into the mix. Carson did make allowances for those who are mentally ill or unable to provide for themselves, but in his view there is to be no rest for who he defines as the able-bodied.

Winners of the Exhibit Columbus Miller Prize announced

Exhibit Columbus, an “annual exploration of architecture, art, design, and community created to celebrate Columbus’ extraordinary design heritage”, has announced the winners of its inaugural Miller Prize. Named after J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller, the prize comes with the opportunity to building a temporary installation on one of five sites in the city. The five winners were selected from a large pool that was eventually narrowed down to 10 finalists, each of whom presented their concepts in a public forum at the Columbus City Hall.

The WEISS/MANFREDI-designed Kent State Center for Architecture and Environmental Design opens

The new Kent State Center for Architecture and Environmental Design has just opened. Designed by WEISS/MANFREDI, the 117,000 square foot building was the winner of an international competition. The soon-to-be LEED Platinum certified structure is intended to link the Kent State campus with the recently revitalized city of Kent through a continuous gallery and new esplanade. Additionally, the Center features a cafe, a gallery, a 200-seat lecture hall, classrooms and a library. On the top of the building is a 650-seat space dubbed the “Design Loft”. On the roof, an 8,400 square foot green roof manages storm water and connects the “Design Loft” to the surrounding area.

The building includes regional materials, specifically an iron-spot brick façade that was fired at a local kiln. Columbus, Ohio wins DOT's $50M Smart City Challenge

Columbus, Ohio, has won a $50m prize for its plans to smarten up its transport system. The money is made up of a $40m Smart Cities grant from the Department of Transportation (DOT), a $90m fund put up by private sector partners and a further $10m from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s charity Vulcan, which will be used to finance electric vehicle infrastructure.

Columbus managed to beat six rival cities that were shortlisted by the DOT earlier this year:

Obama changes the name of tallest mountain from Mt McKinley to Denali

The Obama administration will change the name of North America's tallest mountain peak from Mount McKinley to Denali, the White House said Sunday, a major symbolic gesture to Alaska Natives on the eve of President Barack Obama's historic visit to Alaska. By renaming the peak Denali, an Athabascan word meaning "the high one," Obama waded into a sensitive and decades-old conflict between residents of Alaska and Ohio.

"Alaskans have informally called the mountain Denali for years, but the federal government recognizes its name invoking the 25th president, William McKinley, who was born in Ohio and assassinated early in his second term."

After moving a few times in Cincinnati throughout the later half of the 20th century, the Contemporary Arts Center relocated into its current home at the Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Arts in 2003. Designed by Zaha Hadid, who won the commission in the late 1990s, the building is the first U.S. contemporary art institution designed by a woman. Shortly after the building opened, Herbert Muschamp of The New York Times hailed the building as "the most important American building to be completed since the end of the Cold War.” The non-collecting museum has housed temporary exhibitions, installations, and performances.

Hadid envisioned the CAC building as an "urban carpet" that draws in pedestrians to experience the interior space by walking on a gently sloping meandering path. Aiming to connect the building's monochromatic exterior with its "playful" interior, FRCH added a cafe, lounge, and seating area in hopes to create a livelier and welcoming lobby for visitors.
