The BAU-designed Jiangyin Greenway gives pedestrians an engaging oasis inspired by nearby river

Located in the city of Jiangyin, China, the new Brearley Architects + Urbanists (BAU)-designed greenway captures the local push toward more sustainable transport and builds on the formal qualities of the nearby Yangtze River. Through geographical mimicry, the formal manifestation of the greenway sits as a "scaled model of the Yangtze River." The plazas and balconies that run along the greenway mirror the cities and tributaries that lie along the river.

As one moves along the greenway, sound walls guard the adjacent noise of the freeway; solid and transparent balusters calibrate areas of privacy; shade structures outline reflection zones and seating areas; and framed views are identified through sculptural truss systems that run along focal points along the path.

Moreover, visitors will discover an amphitheater for outdoor performances and community; an exercise playground; slides and climbing ramps and long even swings situated below the elevated levels of the greenway.
