Woodbury School of Architecture to launch three new programs in Fall 2022

Woodbury School of Architecture is accepting applications for three new degree programs set to launch in Fall 2022: Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Practices, and Bachelor of Science in Design Computation.

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management program teaches students to transform the built environment by building sustainably. Students will integrate design, technology, and business analytics with sustainability and the liberal arts, using hands-on, studio-based learning. Coursework will explore human-centered design principles; how to apply business models, ranging from organizational management to strategic thinking to construction management; and investigations in Building Information Modeling (BIM) coupled with other construction-related technologies.

North Dakota State University combines departments to ‘disrupt current design education’

On November 24th, North Dakota State University announced its newest school, The School of Design, Architecture, and Art (SODAA). NDSU combined its architecture, landscape architecture, and visual arts departments into one school, hoping to diversify the learning outcomes students and faculty would gain as each field of study interacts with one another under one roof.

According to their school paper "The Spectrum," Anne Kesler reports, "NDSU is the only school in the state that offers architecture and landscape programs, and with the opening of the new school, the university will further its field of study for design and art education."

Architecture apprenticeship model launching next month between UK schools and firms

The first group of architectural apprentices will start at leading practices such as AHMM, Hawkins\Brown and PRP next month as a major new sector initiative gets underway. Practices AtelierWest, GPA (Get Planning and Architecture), Ingleton Wood, and To-Do Design are also pioneering two types of apprenticeships as a route into the profession in collaboration with London South Bank University.

Following the architecture apprenticeship initiative led by Foster + Partners, the first group entering the ‘earn while you learn’ program will begin next month in the UK. This approach will offer both professional experience and tuition-free academic training, while also providing a salary to apprentices.

Charles Egbu, dean of London Southbank’s School of Architecture and the Built Environment stated, "These apprenticeship courses will provide an alternative, more cost-effective route to ARB registration, while diversifying the profession and strengthening ties between the architectural industry and academia."

London Southbank’s School of Architecture will be the only one to offer Level 6 apprenticeship. Participating schools also include De Montford, Northumbria, Oxford Brookes, and Portsmouth offering Level 7 qualification.

AIAS selects students to participate in CRIT Scholar fellowship program

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) announced the students selected to participate in this year's CRIT Scholar fellowship program. The fellowship program is supported by the AIA and in partnership with several prominent architecture firms. Recipients receive a $1,000 grant for their research project and are matched with a mentor involved in conducting research at an architectural firm.

Chelsey Luiz, University of Oregon
Kevin Park, University of Texas at Arlington

The program aims to support student research and provide a practical perspective through mentor guidance. Each student's final project will be presented at next year's CRIT Live Research Symposia.

University of Chicago, "where fun comes to die," to get its first ever undergraduate architecture program

The art history department recently announced a new minor program in architectural studies, enabling students to pursue a program of study dedicated specifically to architecture for the first time ever. [...] The architectural studies program is currently being offered only as a minor. “We would like to set up a dedicated major, perhaps even an interdisciplinary one, in the future,” Taylor said, but an option to major specifically in architectural studies is not yet available.
