Tulane launches dual degree creating a new pathway for students, informed by design, science and engineering

As climate change and extreme weather continue to impact communities around the world, the need for professionals skilled in the fields of landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, and planning is growing. In response, the Tulane School of Architecture (TuSA), in partnership with the Tulane School of Science and Engineering (SSE), has launched a new graduate dual degree – the Master of Landscape Architecture and Master of Science in River-Coastal Science and Engineering.

The new Landscape Architecture and Engineering program creates a pathway for students interested in pursuing a career in landscape architecture, informed by a strong background in science, and in engineering, with high design abilities focused on environmental and social issues. As the 2023-24 academic year unfolds, Archinect is looking at all the exciting events at architecture schools nationwide with our Get Lectured series. Today, we look at events and speakers coming to Tulane School of Architecture, beginning with Professor Margarita Jover’s presentation ‘Cities & Rivers: architecture beyond the object’ on October 16.

The school shares: “This year, Tulane School of Architecture has themed our lecture series 'Thinking Out Loud.' Our intent is to redirect attention from conventional architectural outcomes to the underlying ideologies, conceptual structures, and foundational thought processes that drive groundbreaking architectural pursuits.”

Details: "Join A Rising Tide, and AAPI Design Alliance for an event during NYCxDESIGN to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islanders in design. Hosted by the Pratt Institute School of Architecture, this event, timed to coincide with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, will feature short presentations by emerging API design firms and a networking hour for interior designers, architects, makers, and landscape architects. Pentagram designs new visual identity for Tulane School of Architecture

Creating a strong and impactful visual identity for brands and companies is essential. This follows suit for institutions and academic departments. Tulane School of Architecture recently announced its partnership with renowned design firm Pentagram and unveiled its reimagined visual identity. Together, Tulane and Pentagram created a "new suite of branded materials and an entirely redesigned website."

According to Tulane, the school is entering a "new era of educating future professionals in the built environment on the importance of navigating humans' relationship with water and supporting local communities in a wide range of design challenges." With this in mind, the visual rebranding also aimed to cultivate discourse in how the school addresses "pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges."

Designers, educators Omar Ali and Emmanuel Osorno join Tulane as fellows in new Deans’ Equity and Inclusion Initiative

Tulane School of Architecture has selected designers and educators Omar Ali and Emmanuel Osorno to join the faculty as the school’s inaugural Architecture Fellows. As part of their two-year fellowships, they will also join the first cohort for the newly launched Deans’ Equity and Inclusion Initiative, a national partnership co-founded by Tulane School of Architecture. Ali, co-founder of table of co., will serve as the 2021-23 Architecture and Urbanism Fellow at Tulane. Osorno, founder of EOstudio, will serve as the 2021-23 Architecture and Social Innovation Fellow.

Tulane researchers receive grant to repurpose abandoned "separate but equal" schools in Louisiana

Laura Blokker, interim director of the Tulane University School of Architecture's Preservation Studies program, and Andrew Liles, assistant professor of architecture at the school, have won the Richard L. Blinder Award, a $15,000 grant from the Trustees of the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation that will aid the researchers in their efforts to repurpose abandoned school facilities originally built to enforce Jim Crow-era racial segregation in education.

The schools, built as part a last-ditch attempt to establish "separate but equal" educational facilities in the state, were abandoned as racial integration began to take hold in 1970, and have sat empty for many years. The grant award will allow researchers to work with alumni of the schools in designing reuse strategies for the buildings, Tulane News reports.

After Katrina, Tulane's architecture school pivots into a community builder

[Tulane's] architecture program, established in 1894, is one of the country's oldest, but before Hurricane Katrina it was a little stuffy, known, if anything, for historic preservation, and not particularly prestigious. After the storm, the school reinvented itself as a destination for students and faculty interested in building in low-income neighborhoods and fragile environments.
