Get Lectured: New Jersey Institute of Technology, Fall '23

Get Lectured offers a look at the various events taking place at North American architecture schools each semester. Today, our tour continues with a look at public programming at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) this Fall.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the architect program at NJIT and the 15th anniversary of HCAD. The College will be hosting a Gala reception on October 26 that includes a silent auction of different faculty members’ artwork. Tickets for the event, which start at $50, can be found here.

Events began with the Alumni Award Winners Roundtable on September 28 and will be followed by another titled 'Whither Brick City?' and focused on development in the city of Newark on October 12. Our Archinect Get Lectured series continues today with a look at the goings-on on campus at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Hillier College of Architecture and Design this spring.

The school shares: “Since 2007, an endowment established with the American Institute of Architects New Jersey Chapter (AIANJ) has increased the breadth of the lecture series by allowing for the establishment of the AIANJ Endowed Lecture each April and a symposium each fall.”

The semester has already seen a visit from Princeton University professor and Atelier Office Principal Mitch McEwen on January 30. Events will continue on February 20 when Texas Tech University’s Ersela Kripa comes to campus to discuss her work with AGENCY. She will be followed on March 2 by Parsons School of Design professor Allan Wexler.

Organized by Georgeen Theodore, Dir. Master of Infrastructure Planning, and Ana Penalba Estebanez, Lecturer, the Hillier College of Architecture and Design at New Jersey Institute of Technology shares their upcoming lectures for Spring 2021. The College shares, "The world is facing unprecedented challenges: an ongoing pandemic, structural racism, global warming, political instability, and increasing economic inequality." This Spring their lecture series "explores the topic of responsibility, probing how architecture and design have contributed to these conditions, questioning architectures’ and designs’ ability to respond, and exploring different models of professional responsibility, asking how does architecture/design respond and what is the architect/designer’s responsibility?"

Dr. Branko Kolarevic appointed as dean of NJIT's College of Architecture and Design

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has appointed Branko Kolarevic as their new dean of the College of Architecture and Design, effective July 1st, 2019.

Dr. Kolareivc, who is regarded as an expert on the use of digital technologies in design and production, received a Diploma Engineer of Architecture degree from the University of Belgrade and a Master of Design Studies and Doctor of Design from Harvard University.

He is one of the founding directors of the Laboratory for Integrative Design at the University of Calgary, where he held a Chair in Integrated Design from 2007 to 2016 as well as other positions such as associate dean and co-director of the Computational Design Media Program.

Kolareivic also brings additional academic experience having taught at the University of Pennsylvania (where he founded the Digital Design Research Lab in 2001), as well as the University of Hong Kong, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Northeastern, Harvard University and mo...

NJIT CoAD Announces New Director for School of Architecture

Richard Garber, associate professor of architecture, has been appointed director of the School of Architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Garber is the author of “BIM Design: Realizing the Creative Potential of Building Information Modeling” (Wiley, 2014). He is an award-winning architect and partner at GRO Architects. In addition to large-scale planning, Garber is an internationally recognized expert in the application of parametric design and building information modeling.

Richard Garber, associate professor of architecture, has been appointed director of the School of Architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), effective immediately.

Garber is the author of “BIM Design: Realizing the Creative Potential of Building Information Modeling,” published by Wiley in 2014. He also was the editor of “Closing the Gap: Information Models in Contemporary Design Practice,” published by Wiley in 2009. He is an award-winning architect and partner at GRO Architects. In addition to large-scale planning, Garber is an internationally recognized expert in the application of parametric design and building information modeling.

In 2009, Garber and his architecture students were selected as finalists in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.
