Zaha Hadid beyond buildings: architect launches new design gallery

She has become a global brand so desirable that her buildings in China are now being pirated – before they are even finished. So what territory is left to conquer? The answer might be found by peering through the windows of an innocuous looking building on Clerkenwell Road in east London, which opened this week as the Zaha Hadid Design Gallery, part of Clerkenwell Design Week.

Parabola Chair Wins 2013 ICFF Studio Award

Los Angeles-based architect and product designer Carlo Aiello has shared with us his Parabola Chair design which recently won him the prestigious International Contemporary Furniture Fair Studio Award. The chair will be exhibited during the upcoming ICFF, May 18-21 in New York, and is currently on display at Bergdorf Goodman windows.

As we previously announced, we've partnered up with the LA Film Festival and Designer Pages to host a competition to design the interiors and layout of this year's VIP Director's Lounge at the LA Film Festival. There are only a few days left until the deadline, but don't fret, you can still submit a winning entry!

We're looking for creative solutions to the design problem described in the brief. The winner will be selected both on his/her proposal, AND also his/her experience and previous work as displayed on his/her Archinect profile. If you have a killer portfolio, and some good ideas, we encourage you to submit! The winner will be prominently displayed among a very prestigious group of wealthy and creative people in the entertainment industry, which is a pretty sweet place to market your design skills.

Rudy's pink by Stephen Prina, as he remembers it

“brave new color, for a brave new world.”

"It’s 1980s Los Angeles. Nighttime. (Freshly graduated Michael Asher students from Cal Arts,) Stephen Prina and fellow artist Christopher Williams walk along La Brea Avenue and a pink shape in a glowing storefront display catches their attention. Unable to identify the object, they approach the store and discover the puzzling unit is a desk designed by Austrian architect R.M. Schindler. Something feels odd about the desk, and the artists soon learn it was once built-in to a Schindler house; but, having been removed from its original architectural context, the desk has been painted pink and is now presented, awkwardly, as a freestanding object.

Looking back on that noteworthy discovery nearly three decades later, Prina says of the desk, “it appeared to us as an amputated limb.” Thus the seed was planted for Prina’s installation As He Remembered It, opening as part of his solo exhibition in BCAM and in the Pavilion for Japanese Art. OMA Creates Prada’s Ideal House

Ikea home away from home comes to Paris airport

Ikea has opened a pop-up lounge at Paris's Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport for passengers to relax in between flights during the busy summer travel season. The lounge, situated in the airport's terminal 3, is open from July 13 to August 5, and includes various spaces laid out like bedrooms, a living room and a play area for children. Covering a total of 220 square meters, the Ikea space is open to all passengers.

Jimenez Lai’s “Three Little Worlds” now open at the Architecture Foundation

Remember Jimenez Lai's recent Kickstarter project, trying to turn his conceptual project Hefner/Beuys House into a reality at the Architecture Foundation in London? Well, it certainly worked out for him and his Chicago-based architecture practice Bureau Spectacular: the project got funded and the installation Three Little Worlds opened this week, just right on time for the London Festival of Architecture.

Viewing woodworking in the context of objects made with wood; housing, particularly stick frame construction, emerges as possibly the most widespread use of the material throughout the modern world. Utilizing these techniques in a studio based practice, it is my hope to further the conversation on how notions of craft fit into the modern world.

Boston-based design and digital fabrication firm Radlab, Inc has sent us an exceptionally cute example of robo milling: a baby crib with a twist.

The hybrid crib and youth bed was commissioned with an interest in creating an alternative to the standard crib: solid instead of slatted, low and partially open rather than high and closed off, compelling and integral as opposed to generic and alien. Our response, in an effort to provide a framework for processing these pragmatic and aesthetic concerns, was to explore an interplay of conceptual dualities: dark and light, hard and soft, thick and thin, solid and void, analog and digital. At its core, the project is a simple expression of the convergence between overtly additive and subtractive processes, the building up of many layers of material meeting the excavation of many layers material.
