Pope Francis announces return of Parthenon fragments in a potential precedent-setter

Pope Francis will send back to Greece the three fragments of the Parthenon Sculptures that the Vatican Museums have held for two centuries, in the latest case of a Western museum bowing to demands for restitution of artifacts to their countries of origin.

The bequest was labeled a “donation” from the Vatican by Pope Francis, who also called it “a concrete sign of [his] sincere desire to follow in the ecumenical path of truth.”

The British Museum, meanwhile, is also reportedly in talks with Greece to return parts of its argued-over trove of Elgin Marbles as early as next year. A timeline for the Vatican's return to the Acropolis Museum has not yet been verified by either party.

The British Museum is facing legal action from one of the UK’s leading heritage preservation organisations over its refusal to allow the 3D scanning of a piece in its Parthenon marbles collection. The Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA) said it would serve an injunction against the museum imminently, raising the stakes in the dispute between the two.

The 269-year-old institution is said to have refused a request from the Oxford-based Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA) that would have reproduced a metope from the Acropolis’ south-facing facade for an important proof of concept. The scans are supposed to allow for a robotic replication process that can manipulate the original Pentelic marble material to “sub-millimeter” accuracy, according to the IDA.

“Our aim is to give people a chance to see just how extraordinary a copy can be,” the Institute’s executive director Roger Michel told the Guardian. “Copies [of the Parthenon sculptures] in the past have been low-quality plaster casts. This will be orders of magnitude better. It will help people see and feel the potential of this technology in ways mere words can’t describe.”

Architects Patricia Urquiola, Kengo Kuma, and five other designers participate in new miniature home series called 'The Village'

Tuscan-based product and design studio Salvatori created a series that "captures the essence of home" through miniatures titled The Village. Joined by Kengo Kuma, Yabu Pushelberg, and Patricia Urquiola, to name a few, the mini-series invited each architect and designer to develop a "series of whimsical imaginary houses, each designed to address important and fundamental themes of contemporary living."

Starting this past March, famed Spanish architect and curator Patricia Urquiola unveiled the collection's first series. Her contribution to The Village series is a set of small stone homes titled Kore. Urquiola shared during Salvatori's collection release, the series was "a reflection on domestic spaces, something that is more important than ever today. Home has become the center of our lives, our town or city, our habitat. We have all become domestic navigators, trying to orient ourselves to these new latitudes, ways of living."

Marble ~ ish: Harry der Boghosian Fellowship 2017 installation

Marble~ish was developed as part of the research from the 2016/17 Harry der Boghosian Fellowship at Syracuse School of Architecture. Conducted by Maya Alam in collaboration with her students “~ISH: Stages Before the Real” is an installation exploring questions concerning the in-between: site specificity/site-less, object/landscape, analog/digital, distinctive/similar and flat/flat-less.

The exhibition represents the culmination of a yearlong design research effort conducted at the School of Architecture. The investigation as a whole deals with 'speculations on social dreaming and experimental preservation in consideration of new media and its effects on our perception'.

Researchers develop a new solution to protect deteriorating marble

Princeton University researchers have announced the development of a low-cost, nontoxic coating that can preserve iconic stone structures from decay. Comprised of hydroxyapatite, a calcium compound that can be found in bones and teeth, the solution seeps into the stone’s surface, binding cracks. According to the press release, the result is a stronger, more resilient work of art.

The researchers developed the solution for the stone monuments that populate the Certosa di Bologna cemetery in Italy. Made of marble, the stones have started to deteriorate. Apparently, the major innovation at hand is finding that the nontoxic solvent used in the solution, water, can seep deep into the cracks, causing a reaction within 24 hours.

Now researchers are working towards further improving the hydroxyapatite treatment by adding alcohol as well as electric currents.

Exploring Alvar Aalto's "benign errors"

Could one of Alvar Aalto's most sublime works be the result of a mistake? And more intriguingly, did Aalto exploit error to acheive a certain aesthetic/politically pointed effect? In this thoughtful piece on Medium, Dan Hill explores the role of "benign errors" in Aalto's work, a term the architect himself coined. Hill centers his focus on the concert hall known as Finlandia, taking particular issue with (but not limiting his scope to) the building's marble facade, noting that:

"Even more remarkably, this apparently uniform and utterly wonderful bowed marble grid appears to have been a mistake, an outcome of the temperature extremes in Helsinki (I’m reminded of the Dali-esque images of failing façades from Jeffrey Inaba's talk at Postopolis regarding Kazakhstan’s -40ºC to +40ºC, though it’s not quite that bad here.)"
