TALLER announces plans for a first-ever rowhouse development in Los Angeles

Los Angeles-based architecture firm Taller has announced plans for what would be the first project built under L.A. County's compact lot subdivision ordinance on a single parcel of land at 925 Brannick Avenue in East Los Angeles. Plans call for razing an existing single-story, two-bedroom house, clearing the way for the construction of four single-family homes.

The plan is one of a series of novel attempts to deliver to market the much-needed stock of "missing middle" housing brought on by developer recalcitrance and new zoning laws that incentivize multifamily development more heavily. The residences range between 885- to 1,118-square-feet and will be constructed using an insulated panel system that TALLER says is 30 percent stronger than typical stick-framed designs.

"[The] Brannick Homes are a deliberate investment into a working class neighborhood with deep roots in Los Angeles," the firm describes in a statement. "The homes are state-of-the-art projects that prioritize contextual aesthetics, sustainability, great design, and—of course—attainability. They have been thoughtfully wrought to maximize efficiency in order to keep building costs low, allowing for the new homes to enter the market at below-median prices and still remain profitable to our investors."

In 1970, Los Angeles was a sort of modern utopia-in-progress. At the same time—and for the first time, really—Mexican Americans were becoming an economic, cultural and political force. East Los Angeles became the center of the Chicano Movement, Whittier Boulevard its bustling “Main Street.”

Los Angeles urban planner, artist, community activist, and educator, James Rojas pens a brief history of "Latino Urbanism" tracing through his own life, the community, and the physical space of East Los Angeles. Mr. Rojas coined the word Latino Urbanism and a strong advocate of its meaning, using community gatherings and discussions via his artfully created wood blocks as buildings enabling non architects create imaginary city blocks, civic centers and neighborhoods under his story telling guidance..

Boyle Heights activists want all art galleries to GTFO of their neighborhood

"We’re not against art or culture," [says Boyle Heights activist Maga Miranda.] "...But the art galleries are part of a broader effort by planners and politicians and developers who want to artwash gentrification." "We’re saying that they need to make a bigger effort to amplify the voices of the people that are gonna be most affected by this, and that doesn’t happen to be artists in this situation. It happens to be people who can’t afford to live here anymore."

Amid widespread gentrification in LA, activists in Boyle Heights have been scrutinizing the art galleries that set up shop there in recent years — including significant spaces like Self Help Graphics, which helped put the Eastside neighborhood on the cultural map. While activists want to prevent developers from taking control and “artwashing gentrification”, some gallery owners have expressed mixed reactions. The debate gets even more convoluted considering that some activists are also working artists.

Latino Placemaking: How the Civil Rights Movement Reshaped East LA

Latino Placemaking goes beyond creating great public spaces. It also includes cultural identity, which is shaped by needs, desires, and imagination. The Latino quest for cultural identity parallels the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, which has its genesis in protests – many of which were carried out in public spaces.
