Get Lectured: Boston Architectural College, Fall '23

With the Fall term starting, architecture schools are getting ready to welcome students for another academic year. That also means another season of exciting lecture programs from schools. To kick off Archinect's Get Lectured Fall 2023 series, we highlight upcoming events from Boston Architectural College's Fall lecture program.

The School's Just Communities Fall 2023 lecture series started with a lecture from Hansel Bauman in his presentation DEAFSPACE: Cultural Origins and Lessons on Inclusive Design for All on August 15. On September 13, the school welcomes architect, planner, and educator David Lee of Stull and Lee, Inc, who will present "When 1+1 = 3."

Architect Pascale Sablan will deliver the school's Child's Memorial lecture on October 5, where she will provide an engaging discussion titled "I Was Asked to Stand." Moshe Safdie says he 'paid a price' for antagonizing post-modernism

“In the 70s and 80s, my ideas were ignored. I was antagonistic to postmodernism [...] and I paid a price.”

The 84-year-old Habitat 67 mastermind sat down with Rowan Moore to discuss his career and new memoir If Walls Could Speak: My Life in Architecture. Among other topics, he said he had “no idea” that his 2011 Marina Bay Sands design would become “an instant icon” and that the political situation in his native Israel brings him “great frustration” even though he believes supporters of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) movement are making a “stupid mistake.”

Safdie then spoke to the chilling reception that met his post-Habitat endeavors in Puerto Rico and New York, which failed to “replicate like mushrooms” as the then 30-something architect had expected. An exhibition of Safdie’s unrealized work is conveniently on display at the Boston Architectural College’s McCormick Gallery from now through January 2nd.

Architect, educator, and Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners co-founder Billie Tsien is set to receive an Honorary Doctorate and deliver the commencement speech at the Boston Architectural College’s (BAC) graduation ceremony on Friday, May 27th.

“It is an immense privilege to have Billie Tsien deliver the BAC’s commencement address to our graduating class in-person this year,” said Boston Architectural College President Mahesh Daas. “Her commitment to designing deeper and slower existential experiences grounded in an unmistakable sense of service, materiality and profound optimism complements the BAC’s own commitment to furthering social justice, inclusion, and diversifying design education.”

As the final weeks of March approach, architecture schools continue with their Spring 2022 lecture event programming. Boston Architectural College, a winner by popular vote of Archinect's 2021 Get Lectured Poster competition, provides another series of lecture events to watch.

The School's Just Design Spring 2022 lecture series welcomed presentations from David Rifkind and Dawit Benti in January, who discussed contemporary Ethiopian architecture, followed by Khushnu Panthaki Hoof (Studio Sangath), who spoke on perceptions of lightness in February. For March, Chuan Hao (Alex) Chen discussed Race, Nation, and Biocontainment Architecture, and Sierra Bainbridge spoke on her work with MASS Design Group in Rwanda.

Boston Architectural College launches software access portal for remote learning students

Boston Architectural College (BAC) has launched a new online access portal called BAC Cloud Canopy for its remote learning community.

The online platform is designed, according to an announcement, to provide "virtual touch points" for "the disenfranchised, the marginalized, the inconvenienced, and unconventional students wherever they live in the world."

The platform includes access to many digital design tools, including Autodesk Revit, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and others, and is geared toward expanding the availability of production software for students who cannot access the school's computer labs.

Universities begin planning for an unpredictable fall semester

As the spring semester comes to close following a swift transition to remote and online learning, the anxiety of the last two months has begun to give way to deeper, existential worries regarding what the future might hold for universities this summer and next semester.

Some universities have begun or are close to announcing changes for the coming summer term, including a continued focus on online learning. In the architecture realm, for example, online-heavy Boston Architectural College recently announced an online-only summer schedule slated to start July 6th. Other schools, whose summer intensive design initiatives act as critical feeder programs to traditional academic year enrollment, will follow suit with their own plans soon.

For the month of March, Archinect is focusing its Spotlight on Boston, the largest city in Massachusetts and the northernmost node of America's Northeast megalopolis.

The focus on Boston follows our recent Spotlight on Miami theme from the month of February.

Boston, of course, has a relatively long history dating back to 1630s when it was first settled by Puritan colonizers from England. In the 390 years since, Boston has grown from a powerful shipping town and a major site of the American Revolution into an intellectual and biomedical powerhouse, home to some of the country's most prestigious schools and universities, including Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which are located in the adjacent city of Cambridge.

The recently introduced IPAL, or Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure, promises to streamline the architectural licensure process for students at 17 universities and colleges by incorporating the Architectural Experience Program into the curriculum. Licensure, which is required by a majority of the fifty states and governing agencies in Canada, usually takes a few years of intense study and rigorous examinations after one's initial formal education is complete to attain. Boston Architectural College announces Glen S. LeRoy as new president

The dean of a Michigan architectural school has been tapped to head the financially struggling Boston Architectural College, after a year-long search that started with the dismissal of longtime BAC president Theodore Landsmark. Glen S. LeRoy, 64, who oversees Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design in Southfield, Mich., will become president of Boston Architectural College Sept. 1.

“The Space of Poetry” exhibition in Boston examines the built environment of poetry

Who knew that architecture could let you perceive poetry in a new angle or two. Currently at Boston Architectural College's 951 Boylston Street Building until May 1, "The Space of Poetry" exhibition reveals the intricate ties between the written art form and architectural history, theory, and design — all by Cara Armstrong, a trained architect and poet who works as an educator, writer, and illustrator.

As an exhibition extra, the gallery is inviting everyone to a free talk on April 30 at 5 p.m. We can be sure this won't be like your typical poetry analysis class.

"The exhibition delves into the space of poetry by bringing it together with architecture history, theory and design, encouraging viewers to look critically at poetic construction and promoting a more evocative understanding of architecture and writing...

Using the lens of architecture and art, [Armstrong] visually considers story, structure, music, and imagination as building blocks. Then, through architectural analysis techniques such as solid/void analysis and diagramming, she translates individual poems into a set of spatial relationships that becomes art in its own right. This allows the work of poets such as John Donne, Jean Valentine, and Jane Mead to converse across time and brings to light similarities in form, structure, and meaning."

BAC Announces Development of Sustainable Field School in Pakistan
Partnership between BAC and National College of Arts-Rawalpindi

The Boston Architectural College is pleased to announce a major step forward in achieving the teaching, learning, research, and cultural awareness goals of the partnership between the BAC and National College of Arts-Rawalpindi (NCA) sponsored by the United States Department of State, Public Affairs Section, and U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan in their University Partnership program.

One of the major objectives in the partnership is to develop a sustainable field school for architectural materials conservation education. Facilitated by the BAC/NCA partnership, on December 26, 2013 a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Fatima Jinnah Women's University and National College of Arts that signs over the stewardship of the historic Haveli Sujan Singh located in the old city section of Rawalpindi to NCA.
