KPF presents Detroit's new University of Michigan Center for Innovation design

A new project in Detroit from Kohn Pedersen Fox will deliver the University of Michigan's Center for Innovation (UMCI), a six-story academic research and teaching facility that is expected to open by the spring of 2027.

Construction has already commenced for the $250 million development, which will be delivered at 200,000 square feet in advance of two other “incubator” and residential structures that will follow at a later date on the four-acre site. The university says the UMCI will serve a host of purposes and is primarily intended for workforce development and different graduate degree programs.

Taubman College announces Antje Steinmuller as new Architecture Chair

The University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced Antje Steinmuller as the next chair of the college’s architecture program. Steinmuller is expected to begin her three-year appointment on July 15th and is described by the college as “the leader best poised to strengthen the research and practice, teaching and learning that make Michigan a leader in architectural education.”

Steinmuller is currently an associate professor at the California College of the Arts (CCA), where she has taught for the past 17 years. She currently chairs the Bachelor of Architecture program and co-directs the Urban Works Agency, CCA’s urbanism research lab, where her research explores the role of design at the intersection of citizen-led and city-regulated processes in the production of urban space.

The University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced its Winter 2024 public speakers series as part of our Get Lectured rundown for the new academic term.

The first event in the school’s Building Culture series will take place today, February 16, with the launch of Charles Waldheim and Jeffrey Nesbit’s new title, Technical Lands: A Critical Primer. Japanese practitioner Jo Nagasaka will follow next on February 19, preceding a presentation from Kwong Von Glinow founders Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow on March 4. Carlos Bedoya of the Mexico City studio Productura follows their appearance on March 18.

Dan Adams and Marie Law Adams of the Massachusetts-based Landing Studio will be on campus on March 25 for a lecture, followed on April 1 by another on the early-20th century German architect and Bauhaus instructor Ludwig Hilberseimer from Rice University's Scott Coleman.

University of Michigan researchers detail new 3D printed upcycled sawdust material for formwork

A recyclable alternative material developed by researchers at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning’s Digital Architecture Research & Technology (DART) Laboratory is providing builders with a more sustainable way of applying concrete casts in the construction process in order to cut down on waste and the environmental impact of projects using the method.

The fully biodegradable BioMatters material is made from sawdust that’s collected and used via robotic 3D printing in the formwork of buildings, an essential element that currently constitutes 40% of all concrete-related construction expenses industry-wide, according to DART.

Strike at Taubman College and the University of Michigan continues as student workers and staff assistants demand fair wages

A group of 40 striking graduate student instructors and staff assistants at the University of Michigan Taubman College have reportedly had their April wages taken from them in response to their participation in a campus-wide movement that has sought improved working conditions and better pay for workers.

The school’s retaliatory move was met with ire, with the strike now going on for nearly a month. Protestors have already been met with police violence and say the University’s latest tactic constitutes an escalation in the midst of bargaining efforts that are, for now, ostensibly stalled.

Following last week’s look at an opening for an Engagement Coordinator at The New York Review of Architecture, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open position on Archinect Jobs for the Architecture Program Chair at the University of Michigan.

Based in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the role calls for an individual to chair the school’s architecture program for a three-year renewable term beginning July 1st, 2024. Candidates for the position must hold or qualify for a tenure or practice track appointment in the architecture program at an associate or full professor level, and display a “record of distinction in teaching and in professional, scholarly, and/or creative achievement.”

University of Michigan researchers merge 3D printing with computational design to create ‘ultra-lightweight, waste-free concrete’

Researchers from the University of Michigan’s Taubman College have unveiled details of their latest innovation in 3D printing, which the team claims creates “ultra-lightweight, waste-free concrete.” Led by architect Aghaei Meibodi and researchers Alireza Bayramvand and Yuxin Lin of the college's DART laboratory, the group’s ‘Shell Wall’ system also claims to be 72% lighter compared to a conventional solid concrete system of the same size.

The research team’s project is a departure from traditional 3D concrete printing, which sees a 3D printing tool head operating parallel to the ground or along a single plane. As we described in our in-depth look at the design and construction of a 3D-printed house in Arizona, the tool head follows a defined path and deposits mortar in horizontal layers, repeating the process until the resulting mold is completed to a defined height and reinforced with rebars or additional concrete.

Taubman College gifted $1.35 million for scholarship that supports future Masters of Urban and Regional Planning students

The University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning has received $1.35 million from retired urban planner and Taubman alumni David Lepo '78. The gift adds to the David A. Lepo Urban Planning Scholarship Fund, which he established in January 2022.

The scholarship supports students with financial needs in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program. It also places a special focus on students from Ohio, which is where Lepo is from.

“I've had a very fortunate life, and that includes the opportunity to attend Taubman College,” said Lepo. “Some people don't have as easy a way as I did. I was very fortunate. I was an out-of-state student and could still afford to go to Michigan. I want everybody to have that chance because there's no reason not to allow everybody to rise to their best.”

Spatializing Digital Pedagogies grants fund innovative online and in-person learning strategies at Taubman College

The University of Michigan Taubman School of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced the 11 winning grantees of the school's Spatializing Digital Pedagogies grant initiative. The awards represent an effort on the part of the school to "help develop a teaching framework for the fall 2020 semester that blends online and modified-residency education," according to a university website.

The 11 grantees were selected for funding by Anya Sirota, associate dean for academic initiatives and associate professor of architecture, and Jacob Comerci, academic innovation project manager. Leaders selected 11 projects to receive support.

New Museum appoints V. Mitch McEwen as curator of IdeasCity initiative

The New Museum announced today the appointment of V. Mitch McEwen as Curator of IdeasCity, the museum's initiative exploring the future of cities. McEwen is the principal and cofounder of A(n) Office, a collaborative of design studios in Detroit and New York exploring the intersection of architecture and exhibition.

IdeasCity is a creative and collaborative enterprise operating through conferences, workshops, commissions, projects, and exhibitions in order to investigate key issues and proposes solutions. The Curator is a two-year appointment linked to the biennial presentation of IdeasCity in New York and is responsible for the two-year cycle leading up to this presentation.

As Curator of IdeasCity, McEwen will head up the 2018–19 cities and launch an open call for cities around the world to apply for the 2020–21 cycle. The next IdeasCity will take place in Toronto on September 15, 2018, in partnership with the Bentway.

The Master of Science in Architecture concentration of Digital and Material Technologies (MS_DMT) brings together Taubman's current Master of Science concentrations in Digital Technologies and Material Systems under one single program.

Jonathan Massey to serve as dean at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at U Michigan

The University of Michigan Taubman School of Architecture and Urban Planning has announced that Jonathan Massey will assume the role of dean starting on August 1, following in the footsteps of Monica Ponce de Leon who left in 2015 to become the dean of Princeton. His deanship will run through 2022.

Massey previously served as dean of architecture and professor at California College of the Arts. Before that, he worked for several significant architecture firms including Frank O. Gehry and Associates (now known as Gehry Partners). From 1994-2001 he taught at Princeton, Barnard, Parsons and Pratt at various times.

Throughout his career, Massey has pioneered transdisciplinary architectural scholarship, perhaps most notably through the Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative, a group of scholars who investigate how buildings inform socioeconomic and political changes. He co-edits the online journal, the Aggregate Website.

ACADIA's 'Floating Megalith' workshop challenges architecture's obsession with surface over volume

Last Wednesday afternoon, traffic briefly stopped at the main entrance to the University of Michigan’s North Campus as 12 of us hauled a stark white blob the size of a jet ski up hills and across intersections. Curious and confused onlookers watched us as we carried what must have seemed like an unidentifiable object towards the small pond located behind the School of Music. Despite the cold and the rain, the workshop group prepared the form for its maiden voyage, and watched as its water ballast was filled, allowing the foam blob to slowly position itself into a floating megalith. Throughout this trek the workshop’s leader, MIT Assistant Professor Brandon Clifford, walked alongside answering questions. For Brandon, this procession towards the water was not just a familiar aspect of his research in megalithic constructions, but instead an essential element of the history and significance of volumetric design.

A practice session is different than the real thing, the big game, the final performance. All the pressures and impingements of the real thing are present—its rules, constraints, and mandate to perform—but it’s also just practice. It happens again and again, and the awareness of that repetition, of any one session being just another in an extensible chain that stretches backward and forward, grants certain permissions: risks can be taken, roles can be rehearsed and reassigned, embarrassments are quickly forgotten, inhibitions fall away. Over time, practice makes the difficult look easy and the accumulated glitches and idiosyncrasies of each session allow for unanticipated discoveries. Practice sessions are real, and then some.

Robot gives a helping hand as Taubman College breaks ground on new school addition

On April 15, 2015, University of Michigan's President Mark Schlissel and Taubman College Architecture and Urban Planning Dean Monica Ponce de Leon broke ground with donor, A. Alfred Taubman on the new wing of the Art & Architecture building. [...] The ceremonial shoveling of the ground was performed by Taubman College's Kuka robot, normally used for architectural digital fabrication research, painted maize and blue for the occasion.

University of Michigan revives plan for architecture school addition and doubles budget to $28M

Five years after scrapping its original proposal for improvements to the Art and Architecture Building, University of Michigan is planning to add a $28 million addition to the 40-year-old structure. [...] Designs for a $13 million, 16,300-square-feet addition were originally approved in 2007, but scrapped two years later. At the time, officials blamed a tough economic climate and limited financial resources.

Taubman receives $1.3M grant to fund research program on urban architecture

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning received a $1.3m grant Monday from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The gift will fund architecture and humanities research on metropolitan issues in cities like Detroit, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro for the next four-and-half years. The Mellon Foundation delivered the “Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities” grant to the University, which supports scholarship and higher education at the intersection of architecture and the humanities.
